Queen Wilhelmina State Park
Queen Wilhelmina State Park is a unit of Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism in the Ouachita Mountains. The original "Castle in the Sky" lodge was built in 1898 on 2,681-foot Rich Mountain, in Polk County, Arkansas. The park is on Talimena Scenic Drive — northwest of Mena, Arkansas and east of the Oklahoma state line. It is the only lodge open on the 235 mile Ouachita Trail. It is located on Arkansas’ second highest peak, Rich Mountain. The lodge has 38 guest rooms, a restaurant, lobby and meeting room. The campground and trails remained open during the renovation. The park is one of the park system's eight mountain parks. History The original lodge was built by the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railroad to house passengers. Many of the railroad's investors were Dutch, so the lodge was named to honor Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, who was to be crowned in September 1898. Vandervoort is a town in Polk County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 120 at the 2000 census. The place is named in honor of the mother of an important early-20th-century railway financier, Jan de Goeijen. Her maiden name was Van der Voort. Geography Vandervoort is located at (34.379737, -94.364666). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 km (0.3 mi2), all land. Tall Peak Fire Tower
The Tall Peak Fire Tower is a historic fire tower in Ouachita National Forest. It is located at the top of Tall Peak in the southwestern part of the national forest in Polk County, Arkansas. It is a fieldstone structure, built about 1938 by a crew of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), and features the distinctive flared corners that typify CCC architecture. It is accessible via a forest service road off Polk County 64 (also known as Forest Service Road 38). Le Flore County, Oklahoma
LeFlore County is a county along the eastern border of the U.S state of Oklahoma. As of the 2010 census, the population was 50,384. Its county seat is Poteau. The county is part of the Fort Smith metropolitan area and the name honors a Choctaw family named LeFlore. The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma is the federal district court with jurisdiction in LeFlore County. History The Choctaw Nation signed the Treaty of Doak's Stand in 1820, ceding part of their ancestral home in the Southeastern U. S. and receiving a large tract in Indian Territory. Saline River (Little River)
The Saline River is an tributary of the Little River in southwestern Arkansas in the United States. Via the Little and Red rivers, it is part of the watershed of the Mississippi River. It rises in the Ouachita Mountains in southeastern Polk County, in the Ouachita National Forest, and flows generally south through Howard County and along Howard County's boundary with Sevier County, through Dierks Lake, which is formed by a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dam. Highway 8 (AR 8, Ark. 8, Hwy. 8) is an east–west state highway in Lower Arkansas. The route of runs from Oklahoma State Highway 63 (SH-63) at the Oklahoma state line east across the state to US Route 65 (US 65) south of Eudora. Route description The route begins at Oklahoma State Highway 63 at the Oklahoma state line near Mena in the Ouachita National Forest and runs east. A concurrency forms with US 59/ US 71 through downtown Mena, and a concurrency with Highway 88 forms after entering the city. Highway 272 (AR 272, Ark. 272, and Hwy. 272) is a designation for two east–west state highways in the Ouachita Mountains region of western Arkansas. One segment of runs west from U.S. Route 71 Business (US 71B) in Waldron to the Waldron Municipal Airport.
