Westernville, New York is a hamlet (and census-designated place) in Oneida County, located west of Adirondack Park and north of Rome, and Utica. Westernville is in the Town of Western, adjacent to Delta Reservoir and Delta Lake State Park. History The Town of Western was formed from the Town of Steuben on March 10, 1797. U.S. Route 20 or U.S. Highway 20 (US 20) is an east–west United States Numbered Highway that stretches from the Pacific Northwest east to New England. The "0" in its route number indicates that US 20 is a major coast-to-coast route. Cato (town), New York
Cato is a town in Cayuga County, New York, United States. The population was 2,443 at the 2020 census. The town is named after Cato the Elder, a Roman statesman. The name was assigned by the surveyors of the Military Tract, and is one of many towns and villages bearing classical place names. The town of Cato contains part of a village also named Cato, as well as the entire village of Meridian. Cato is northwest of Syracuse. History The town was in the Central New York Military Tract, reserved for veterans of the American Revolution. Settlers trickled in during the early 19th century. After the War of 1812, the population increased more quickly. The town was formed in 1802 from part of the town of Aurelius. Kirkland is a town in Oneida County, New York, United States. The population was 10,315 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Samuel Kirkland, a missionary among the Oneidas. The Town of Kirkland is southwest of Utica. In 1829, part of Kirkland was used to form the newer Town of Marshall. Hamilton College is located in the western part of the town. History The first settlement occurred around 1787 near the present village of Clinton. The Town of Kirkland was established in 1827 from the Town of Paris. Erie Canal
The Erie Canal is a historic canal in upstate New York that runs east-west between the Hudson River and Lake Erie. Completed in 1825, the canal was the first navigable waterway connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes, vastly reducing the costs of transporting people and goods across the Appalachians. In effect, the canal accelerated the settlement of the Great Lakes region, the westward expansion of the United States, and the economic ascendancy of New York State. Marcy is a town in Oneida County, New York, United States. The population was 8,982 at the 2010 census. The town was named after Governor William L. Marcy. It lies between the cities of Rome and Utica. The Erie Canal passes through the southern part of the town. The town is home to the SUNY Polytechnic Institute, a four-year public research university in the southeastern part of town. History The first settlers arrived ''circa'' 1773. Barneveld is a hamlet (and census-designated place) located within the Town of Trenton in Oneida County, New York, United States. The population was 284 at the 2010 census, when it was an incorporated village. The name is derived from the name of the Dutch statesman Johan van Oldenbarnevelt (1547–1619). The hamlet is in the eastern part of the town on NY 365. History The village was founded in 1793 by Gerrit Boon, an agent of the Holland Land Company. The Village of Holland Patent is in the western part of the Town of Trenton at the junction of Routes 274, 291, and 365.
