Superior, Montana
Superior is a town in, and the county seat of, Mineral County, Montana, United States. The population was 830 at the 2020 census. History Superior was named after its founders' hometown of Superior, Wisconsin in 1869. The post office was established in 1871 after Mineral County became the site of one of the largest gold strikes that helped settle the West. In the 1860s and 70s, several thousand miners converged on Cedar Creek. Mining has remained central to the economy, along with the development of logging and United States Forest Service activities. In 1908, the Superior Hotel received the first Bibles to be placed in hotel rooms by The Gideons. This is noted on a historic plaque on Mullan Road. The Mineral County Museum is located in Superior. The Colonial Revival architectural style seeks to revive elements of American colonial architecture. The beginnings of the Colonial Revival style are often attributed to the Centennial Exhibition of 1876, which reawakened Americans to the architectural traditions of their colonial past. Haugan, Montana
Haugan (also Waugan) is an unincorporated community in Mineral County, Montana, United States. Haugan is situated east of the Idaho border and west of Missoula on Interstate 90 at the Haugan Exit #16. The St. Regis River flows through the community. Demographics History Haugan was named for H. G. Haugan, Land Commissioner of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway. Haugan was established and maintained to serve as a pusher station for the Milwaukee Road railroad trains ascending the Bitterroot Range of the Rocky Mountains. Haugan was one of several area towns to be destroyed during the Great Fire of 1910. Haugan had a post office for nearly seventy years in the twentieth century. Opened on March 25, 1911, the post office closed on August 31, 1944, only to reopen four years later. This second post office operated from June 16, 1948 to July 22, 1983. Lolo National Forest
__NOTOC__ Lolo National Forest is a national forest located in western Montana, United States with the western boundary being the state of Idaho. The forest spans 2 million acres (8,000 km2) and includes four wilderness areas; the Scapegoat and the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness are partially within the forest while the Welcome Creek and Rattlesnake Wildernesses are solely in Lolo National Forest. The forest was created in 1906 from 4 different previous forests which were combined for administrative purposes. Lolo National Forest is west of the Continental divide and has a biodiversity influenced by both continental and maritime weather creating a transitional forest that has a high number of different plant and tree species. De Borgia is a census-designated place (CDP) in Mineral County, Montana, United States. The population was 69 at the 2000 census. The town was named for the nearby river, which was named after Saint Regis DeBorgia, a Catholic missionary. The post office was established in 1900.
