Klickitat County is a county located in the U.S. state of Washington. As of the 2020 census, the population was 22,735. The county seat and largest city is Goldendale. The county is named after the Klickitat tribe. History Klickitat County was created out of Walla Walla County on December 20, 1859. Samuel Hill was an early promoter of the area, promoting better roads and building local landmarks such as a war memorial replica of Stonehenge (Maryhill Stonehenge) and a mansion that would become the Maryhill Museum of Art. The Sam Hill Memorial Bridge across the Columbia River is named after him. Goldendale is a city and county seat of Klickitat County, Washington, United States, near the Columbia River Gorge. The population within city limits was 3,760 at the 2000 census and 3,407 at the 2010 census, a 9.4% decrease. It is situated in a primarily agricultural area and is also near Goldendale Observatory State Park. The valley in which Goldendale is located offers views of the Cascade Mountains to the west and the Simcoe Hills to the north. Lyle, Washington
Lyle is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Klickitat County, Washington, United States. The population was 499 at the 2010 census. History Established around 1859, the community was originally called "Klickitat Landing". The first European settler was Egbert French, who arrived from Ohio. In 1866, French sold his holdings to James O. Lyle from The Dalles, Oregon, who moved to the north bank of the Columbia River. A post office was soon established with Lyle as the first postmaster, and with mail delivered by steamer from the opposite shore. Steamboat operation lasted until the North Shore Railroad was completed. When the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway came to town in 1907, its line passed somewhat north of the town. The town is notable for its organic dairy and herb farms, and as an access point to Mount Adams and the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Geography Trout Lake is in the northwest corner of Klickitat County, south of the summit of Mount Adams. State Route 141 passes through the community, traveling south to the town of White Salmon and west to its terminus at Gifford Pinchot National Forest. According to the United States Census Bureau, the Trout Lake CDP has a total area of , of which , or 0.61%, are water. Glenwood is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Klickitat County, Washington, United States. It is west-northwest of Goldendale and has a post office with ZIP code 98619. The community is on land whose jurisdiction is disputed between the Yakama Nation and Klickitat County. The community was named for the glen and woods near the original town site. Glenwood was the site of a fatal black bear attack of four year old Victoria Valdez near her home in 1974. The population of Glenwood in 2020 was 179. Climate Glenwood has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate (Csb) according to the Köppen climate classification system.
