The National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) is the United States federal government's official list of districts, sites, buildings, structures and objects deemed worthy of preservation for their historical significance or "great artistic value". A property listed in the National Register, or located within a National Register Historic District, may qualify for tax incentives derived from the total value of expenses incurred in preserving the property. The passage of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) in 1966 established the National Register and the process for adding properties to it. Greene County, North Carolina
Greene County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 20,451. Its county seat is Snow Hill. History Greene County, being a part of land grant by King Charles II of England in 1663, was first settled around 1710 by immigrants from Maryland, Virginia, and parts of North Carolina. The original inhabitants of the area, the Tuscarora Indians, fought with these immigrants and on March 20–23, 1713, a fighting force of South Carolinians and Yamasee Indians, under Colonel Murice Moore, defeated the Tuscarora, under the leadership of Chief Hancock. This was the final major battle of the Tuscarora War at Fort Neoheroka near current day Snow Hill. In 1758, the area now recognized as Greene and Lenoir Counties was separated from Johnston and named Dobbs for the Royal Governor. Jason, North Carolina
Jason is a small unincorporated community in eastern North Carolina, United States, in Greene County. Incorporated in 1885, Jason is an agricultural based community with town water system and volunteer fire service. Jason is located roughly halfway between Snow Hill and LaGrange on Highway 903. First named Aloc, meaning "leave alone" by the Tuscarora Indian tribe, Jason was settled by the Hardy, Mewborn, Aldridge and Kearney families. Once a prospering town with a furniture store, post office, and general store, one could buy groceries, post a letter, purchase alcohol, and be placed in jail, all in the same building. Walstonburg is a town in Greene County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 219 at the 2010 census. It is located north of Snow Hill on North Carolina Highway 91. The town is part of the Greenville Metropolitan Area. History The Titus W. Carr House and Speight-Bynum House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Geography Walstonburg is located in northern Greene County at (35.595187, -77.697724). North Carolina Highway 91 leads south to Snow Hill, the Greene County seat, and north to U.S. Route 264 Alternate, which in turn leads east to Greenville and northwest to Wilson. Snow Hill, North Carolina
Snow Hill is a town in Greene County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,595 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Greene County and is part of the Greenville Metropolitan Area. Snow Hill hosts numerous tennis tournaments during the year. Snow Hill is home to the Green Ridge Racquet Club. Many junior players and adults travel to Snow Hill in order to play in the USTA (United States Tennis Association) Sanctioned tournaments. History In its early history, Snow Hill was near the location of the final major battle of the Tuscarora War at Fort Neoheroka in 1713. There are several theories for the derivation of the town's name. One theory is that the town derived its name from the Contentnea Creek on whose banks Native Americans camped and called them "snowy white," which was translated into "snowy hills."
