Village Creek State Park (Arkansas)
Village Creek State Park is a Arkansas state park in Cross and St. Francis counties, Arkansas in the United States. The park was formed as a result of a study commissioned by the Arkansas General Assembly to form a large park in east Arkansas. Segments of the Old Military Road, later used as the Trail of Tears run through the park, which also features two lakes and 27 holes of golf. History The Arkansas General Assembly authorized a study in 1967 in the interests of forming a recreational area in eastern Arkansas. In addition to the natural value, the Village Creek area contained the historically significant Old Military Road, later used as the Trail of Tears, and parts of William Strong's mid-1800s plantation. Land acquisition began in 1972, and the park was dedicated on June 27, 1976 in a large ceremony including David Pryor and Charlie Rich. Wittsburg is an unincorporated community in Cross County, Arkansas, United States. Wittsburg is located on the St. Francis River and at the southern terminus of Arkansas Highway 163, east of Wynne. Wittsburg was created as a port city as the northernmost navigable point for steamboats on the St. Francis River. Cotton was shipped from the surrounding areas and stored in warehouses at Wittsburg for shipment and sale downstream in the big cotton cities like Memphis, Tennessee or New Orleans, Louisiana. When Cross County was created in 1862 during the Civil War, Wittsburg was a thriving commercial and community hub in the region. Highway 184 (AR 184, Ark. 184, and Hwy. 184) is an east–west state highway in the Arkansas Delta. The route begins at US Highway 64 (US 64) in Parkin and runs east to US 64 in Earle. The route is maintained by the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ArDOT). Route description Highway 184 begins at US 64 near Parkin Archaeological State Park, a state park dedicated to preserve Indian mounds. The route runs north past the historic Northern Ohio School, crossing the Tyronza River very near its mouth at the St. Francis River before turning east. Parkin is a city in Cross County, Arkansas, United States, along the St. Francis River. The population was 1,105 at the 2010 census, down from 1,602 in 2000. Due to the recent population loss, a large segment of the downtown area has many abandoned and boarded-up buildings. The town has recently become known as a speed trap.
