Chesterfield County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, its population was 43,273. Its county seat is Chesterfield. The largest city in the county is Cheraw. Chesterfield County is part of the Charlotte Metropolitan Area. It is located north of the Midlands, on its border with North Carolina. History The county is named for Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield, a British politician who opposed the Stamp Act of 1765, which was deeply unpopular in South Carolina, and who was known for always speaking up for the rights of the colonists while he was serving in the British Parliament and when he served as British Secretary of State. Cheraw ( , ) is a city on the Pee Dee River in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 5,040 at the 2020 census. The greater Cheraw area in the zip code 29520 has a population of 13,689 according to the 2019 ACS data. It has been nicknamed "The Prettiest Town in Dixie". History Origins When the first Europeans arrived in the area it was inhabited by the Cheraw and Pee Dee American Indian tribes. McBee is a town in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 867. McBee is approximately northwest of Florence and northeast of Columbia. History Origin McBee was named after a railroad executive, V.E. "Bunch" McBee, born July 26, 1849, in Greenville County, South Carolina. Bunch McBee was one of South Carolina's leading forces in the building of railroads, was responsible for the Columbia to Hamlet, North Carolina, line, which runs through McBee, and was at one time superintendent of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. 20th century In 1900, McBee's first railroad depot was built. South Carolina Highway 151 (SC 151) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of South Carolina. Known as "the road to the beach" by many residents of the Charlotte metropolitan area due to it being the most direct route to the Grand Strand, it connects the Charlotte metropolitan area to Darlington, Florence, and the aforementioned Grand Strand. Route description SC 151 is a four-lane and mostly divided highway from Darlington to Pageland. For several segments, the road is five lanes, with four travel lanes and a center turn lane. SC 151 starts in Pageland, splitting off from US 601 to bypass the town's business district. Heading southward, it also bypasses Jefferson, heads through downtown McBee, and bypasses Hartsville. South Carolina Highway 102 (SC 102) is a state highway in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The highway connects North Hartsville and Chesterfield, via Patrick. It is designated as an east–west highway (with its official eastern terminus in North Hartsville) though it travels north and south. Route description SC 102 begins at an intersection with U.S. Route 15 Business (US 15 Bus.; North 5th Street) in North Hartsville, within Darlington County, where the roadway continues as Patrick Highway. It travels to the north-northeast and leaves the city limits of the city. It travels through rural areas of the county. Then, it crosses over Cedar Creek, where it enters Chesterfield County.
