Tamworth is a town in Carroll County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 2,812 at the 2020 census. Tamworth includes the villages of Chocorua, South Tamworth, Wonalancet, and Whittier. The White Mountain National Forest is to the north. The town is home to Hemenway State Forest in the north and White Lake State Park in the southeast. New Hampshire Route 153
New Hampshire Route 153 is a secondary north–south highway in Strafford and Carroll counties in eastern New Hampshire. The southern terminus is in Farmington at New Hampshire Route 11. The northern terminus is in Conway village (town of Conway) at New Hampshire Route 16 and New Hampshire Route 113. Between the towns of Wakefield and Effingham, NH 153 crosses into Maine, running for within the town of Parsonsfield. The Maine Department of Transportation has installed Maine-style route shields along this section of the road, but the highway retains its New Hampshire designation. NH 153 is unrelated to Maine State Route 153, which is located over to the northeast. NH 153 is one of two New Hampshire state highways that run within Maine; the other is NH 113B. Madison is a town in Carroll County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 2,565 at the 2020 census. Madison includes the village of Silver Lake and the village district of Eidelweiss. History The area was one of the first to have land grants set aside for soldiers who had served in the French and Indian War. The land covered by these grants, parts of Eaton and Albany, was incorporated in 1852 as "Madison", in honor of President James Madison, who was born 100 years earlier. Center Sandwich, New Hampshire
Center Sandwich is a census-designated place in the town of Sandwich in Carroll County, New Hampshire, in the United States. It is the primary settlement in the town and had a population of 156 at the 2020 census. The village center and surrounding area are listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Center Sandwich Historic District. The village is home of the Sandwich Fair, held annually in early October. History Center Sandwich began as the site of an early gristmill, erected in 1768 by Daniel Beede, which was followed in 1780 by a sawmill, both on the banks of the Red Hill River. Roads were then built to the area, and the village and surrounding rural parts of town grew from about 900 people in 1790 to over 2,000 in 1820. Horn Pond
Horn Pond is a water body located on the border of Acton, Maine, and Wakefield, New Hampshire, in the United States. The lake is both spring-fed and fed by the outflows of Great East Lake to the north and Wilson Lake to the east. Horn Pond's outlet is the Salmon Falls River which forms a natural border between Maine and New Hampshire and empties into the Piscataqua River east of Dover, New Hampshire, and ultimately the Gulf of Maine. Horn Pond is classified as "Potentially Non-supporting" under the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services' revised water quality standards for oligotrophic lakes. The Horn Pond watershed covers that is primarily forested (70%). Only 6% of the watershed is developed, with 34% buildable area. Great East Lake
Great East Lake is an water body located in Carroll County, New Hampshire, and York County, Maine, in the United States. The lake is shared by the towns of Wakefield, New Hampshire, and Acton, Maine, with 45% of its surface area in Acton and 55% in Wakefield. The lake is the farthest upstream of the five headwater lakes of the Salmon Falls River, a tributary of the Piscataqua River. Water from Great East Lake flows out its dam and through the Newichawannock Canal into Horn Pond, then into the Salmon Falls River below Horn Pond. The widest part of the lake is in New Hampshire. The lake narrows to the east in Maine, creating the First, Second and Third basins. Great East Lake is the largest of the Salmon Falls headwater lakes. Moultonborough is a town in Carroll County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 4,918 at the 2020 census, up from 4,044 at the 2010 census. Moultonborough is bounded in large part by Lake Winnipesaukee in the southwest and to a lesser extent by Squam Lake in the northwest corner. The town includes the census-designated place of Suissevale and the community of Lees Mill. History The first European settlers were grantees from Hampton, New Hampshire, among whom were at least sixteen Moultons, giving the town its name. Jackson is a town in Carroll County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,028 at the 2020 census, up from 816 at the 2010 census. Jackson is a resort area in the White Mountains. Parts of the White Mountain National Forest are in the west, north and east. History Once consisting of several large land grants by colonial Governor John Wentworth, the town was first named "New Madbury", after the seacoast town of Madbury. In 1772, a road was built through Pinkham Notch, and the area was first settled in 1778 by Benjamin Copp and his family.
