This is a List of National Historic Landmarks in South Carolina, United States. The United States' National Historic Landmark (NHL) program is operated under the auspices of the National Park Service, and recognizes buildings, sites, structures, districts, and objects according to a list of criteria of national significance. ''The Greenville News'' is a daily morning newspaper published in Greenville, South Carolina. After ''The State'' in Columbia and Charleston's ''The Post and Courier'', it is the third largest paper in South Carolina. History ''The Greenville News'' started off as a four-page publication in 1874 by A.M. Speights. For a one-year subscription, the cost was eight dollars. After five different owners and many editors, the Peace family under the leadership of Bony Hampton Peace bought the paper in 1919 from Ellison Adger Smyth, around the same time that Greenville was becoming known as "The Textile Center of the South." The Peace family acquired the evening paper ''The Piedmont'' in 1927. In 1965 both papers helped to form Multimedia Inc. Then in 1995, the smaller afternoon paper and the larger morning paper merged to become ''The News-Piedmont.'' Woodside, South Carolina
Woodside Cotton Mill Village Historic District is a national historic district located in Greenville County, South Carolina. The district encompasses 278 contributing buildings and 2 contributing sites in an early 20th century urban South Carolina textile mill village. Centered on a mill founded by John T. Woodside in 1902, the district is located just west of the city limits of Greenville and is largely intact despite modernizations made by a succession of mill and home owners. The mill itself is a rectangular, brick, four-story building designed by J.E. Sirrine and built between 1902 and 1912. Eventually the mill became the largest cotton mill under one roof in the United States and one of the largest in the world. South Carolina Highway 414 (SC 414) is a state highway in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The highway travels through mostly rural areas of Greenville County. Route description SC 414 begins at an intersection with U.S. Route 276 (US 276; Geer Highway) south of Marietta, within Greenville County. It travels to the north-northeast and curves to the northeast and crosses Bull Creek. The highway curves to the east-southeast and has a very brief concurrency with US 25. SC 414 travels to the northeast and crosses over Mush and Johnson creeks. It travels through North Greenville University in Tigerville. Tigerville is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Greenville County, South Carolina, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census the population was 1,312. It lies north of Taylors, northeast of Travelers Rest, and northwest of Greer. North Greenville University, a private institution of higher education affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention, and whose baseball team won the national NCAA Division II baseball tournament in 2022, is located in Tigerville. Piedmont, South Carolina
Piedmont is a census-designated place (CDP) along the Saluda River in Anderson and Greenville counties in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The population was 5,411 at the 2020 census. Piedmont is a part of the Greenville-Anderson metropolitan area. History Native Americans and early settlers of Piedmont called the area "Big Shoals of the Saluda" after the Saluda River. The Native Americans used the shoals as a crossing. David Garrison established a grist mill around 1850 upon the shoals changing the name of the area to Garrison Shoals. Henry Pinckney Hammett bought this property for his cotton mill that used water power of the shoals. The name of the area changed again to Piedmont, "Foot of the Mountains" and became a mill town. Pelham (also known as Sugar Tit) is an unincorporated community in Spartanburg County in the upstate of the U.S. state of South Carolina.
