Gallatin County, Kentucky
Gallatin County, is a county located in the northern part of the U.S. state of Kentucky. Its county seat is Warsaw. The county was founded in 1798 and named for Albert Gallatin, the Secretary of the Treasury under President Thomas Jefferson. Gallatin County is included in the Cincinnati-Middletown, OH-KY-IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located along the Ohio River across from Indiana. History The county was formed on December 14, 1798. Gallatin was the 31st Kentucky county to be established. It was derived from parts of Franklin and Shelby counties. Later, parts of the county were pared off to create three additional counties: Owen in 1819, Trimble in 1836, and Carroll in 1838. Today Gallatin is one tenth of its original size. Warsaw is a List of cities in Kentucky, home rule-class city in and the county seat of Gallatin County, Kentucky, Gallatin County, Kentucky, United States, located along the Ohio River. The name was suggested by a riverboat captain, who was reading ''Thaddeus of Warsaw'', by Jane Porter, when the city was being founded. History Warsaw began as a landing on the Ohio River in 1798 called "Great Landing". Kentucky Route 35 (KY 35) is a 12.833-mile-long state highway in Kentucky that runs from US 127 in Owen County south of Sparta and heads north and goes through Sparta and meets KY 467 before meeting Interstate 71. KY 35 then passes by the Kentucky Speedway and comes to an end at US 42 in Warsaw. Route description KY 35 begins at an intersection with US 127 in Owen County, heading northwest as a two-lane undivided road. The route passes through farmland with some trees and homes and intersects the southern terminus of KY 1316. The road heads through woods before curving west and passing farm fields. It descends a long hill into the broad Eagle Creek valley and crosses the creek at Sparta in Gallatin County, in which it is Sparta Pike. In Sparta, the road crosses a CSX railroad line and intersects KY 467. The route forms a brief concurrency with KY 467 for a block and passes homes and businesses. Sparta is a home rule-class city in Gallatin and Owen counties in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The population was 231 at the 2010 census. Sparta is home to Kentucky Speedway. Geography Sparta is located in southwestern Gallatin County at (38.685753, -84.907136). The center of town is in Gallatin County on the north side of Eagle Creek; the city limits extend south across the creek into Owen County and north for up Kentucky Route 35, past Interstate 71 at Exit 57 and encompassing all of the Kentucky Speedway north of the Interstate. Via KY 35 it is north to Warsaw, the Gallatin County seat, and south to Owenton, the Owen County seat. I-71 leads northeast to Covington and southwest to Louisville.
