National Railway Equipment
National Railway Equipment Company is an American railroad equipment rebuilding, leasing, and manufacturing company, headquartered in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. NREC sells new and rebuilt locomotives to railroad companies worldwide, with an emphasis on the North American market. N-ViroMotive Series NRE's flagship locomotive product is dubbed the N-ViroMotive and is targeted at providing light duty road switcher engines with increased efficiency and decreased air and noise pollution. These locomotives are specifically targeted for yards and other urban environments where noise & exhaust from idling locomotives can become a nuisance. They also fill a market segment for light duty locomotives now largely abandoned by the major builders, GE & Electro-Motive, which have not listed such locomotives in their catalog for nearly 20 years. N-ViroMotives are newly built as opposed to a rebuilt with donor parts. They use a low hood design with up to three diesel gensets that supply cur ...

AAR Wheel Arrangement
The AAR wheel arrangement system is a method of classifying locomotive (or unit) wheel arrangements that was developed by the Association of American Railroads. Essentially a simplification of the European UIC classification, it is widely used in North America to describe diesel and electric locomotives (including third-rail electric locomotives). It is not used for steam locomotives, which use the Whyte notation instead. The AAR system counts axles instead of wheels. Letters refer to powered axles, and numbers to unpowered (or idler) axles. "A" refers to one powered axle, "B" to two powered axles in a row, "C" to three powered axles in a row, and "D" to four powered axles in a row. "1" refers to one idler axle, and "2" to two idler axles in a row. A dash ("–") separates trucks or wheel assemblies. A plus sign ("+") refers to articulation, either by connecting bogies with span bolsters or by connecting individual locomotives via solid drawbars instead of couplers. 1A-A1 "1 ...

NRE 2GS12B
The NRE 2GS12B is a low-emissions diesel genset switcher locomotive built by National Railway Equipment Company as part of its N-ViroMotive series of low-emission locomotives. It is powered by two Cummins QSK15 I6 engines with each one developing and creating a total power output of . The locomotives are compliant with the EPA's Tier 4 emissions standards requirements for non-road diesel engines. Development In 2004, the United States Environmental Protection Agency ordered that by 2015, all new non-road engines, like those used in locomotives needed to meet the stringent Tier 4 standard: no more than 1.3 g/bhp-hr of NOx and 0.03 g/bhp-hr of particulates. Looking to demonstrate a new Tier 4 compliant switcher locomotive, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District received a $529,810 grant from the California Air Resources Board (ARB) Air Quality Improvement Program. The district selected National Railway Equipment Company (NRE) to build the locomotive, which would be ...

NRE 3GS21B
The NRE 3GS21B is a low-emissions diesel genset locomotive built by National Railway Equipment (NRE). Instead of a single prime mover, the NRE genset locomotive is powered by three separate Cummins QSK19C engines providing a total power output of . Each engine could be individually started or shut off depending on load reducing overall diesel emissions and improving fuel efficiency. More than 150 of the 3GS21B genset locomotives have been produced to date, with the majority of these units being manufactured at NRE's Mount Vernon shops in Southern Illinois. In addition, three road slug models have also been produced. Flexibility Because the engines are modular, flexibility is obtained: *If one engine fails, the others can continue at reduced power. *If a lower axle load is needed, one engine can be left off. *When reduced power is needed, one or more of the engines can be turned off, saving fuel and wear and tear. *The QSK19C engine is common to the four variants of the NRE 3G ...
