National Professional Soccer League (South Africa)
The National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) was a South African association football league that existed between 1971 and 1995. During those years, the league, however, had three completely different organisations. History 1971–1977 In 1971–1977 it was only for Black South African teams. It was a racial league for Black people only. 1978–1984 Then it merged with National Football League (NFL), which previously had been organised only for White South African players in 1959–1977. The two leagues together formed a new topflight “non-racial” football league in 1978–1984 (also named NPSL), where the “white teams” were allowed to field a maximum of three black players. Some teams were for white people while other teams were of black people, and on the club's of whites only 3 blacks were allowed. National First Division
The National First Division (NFD), officially known as the Motsepe Foundation Championship for sponsorship reasons, is the second-highest league of South African club football after the South African Premier Division. Both the NFD and South African Premier Division are organised by the Premier Soccer League. Structure and rules Seasons 2007–2011 The restructured NFD was divided into two streams, one inland and another coastal – each of which consisted of 8 teams. The winners of the two streams played against each other in a 'final' at the end of the season – the winner of which was promoted to the PSL. The loser of the 'final' played in a mini-tournament/play-offs against the two second-placed teams in each stream and the 15th-placed team on the PSL log. Internal resistance to apartheid in South Africa originated from several independent sectors of South African society and took forms ranging from social movements and passive resistance to guerrilla warfare. Mass action against the ruling National Party (NP) government, coupled with South Africa's growing international isolation and economic sanctions, were instrumental in leading to negotiations to end apartheid, which began formally in 1990 and ended with South Africa's first multiracial elections under a universal franchise in 1994. Apartheid was adopted as a formal South African government policy by the NP following their victory in the 1948 general election. From the early 1950s, the African National Congress (ANC) initiated its Defiance Campaign of passive resistance. The National Soccer League (NSL) was a South African football (soccer) league established in 1985, as a response to boardroom disagreements in the new topflight non-racial league NPSL (established in 1978 after a merger between NFL and “NPSL for African people”). Ephraim Matsilele Sono OIS (born Madoda Walletjies Mkulwana, 17 July 1955), better known as Jomo Sono, is a South African football club owner, coach and former professional footballer. He has been variously nicknamed the "Black Prince of South African Soccer", "Bra J" and "Mjomana". Early life and football career Sono was born in Queenstown, South Africa. When he was eight years old, his father Eric Bhamuza Sono, who was a midfielder for the Orlando Pirates football team in the early 1960s, died as a result of a car crash. Soon after, his mother abandoned him. Consequently, Sono was left in the care of his ailing grandparents; as they were very poor, he had to resort to selling apples and peanuts at football games and train stations to clothe himself, buy food for his grandparents and pay school fees. Ace Ntsoelengoe
Patrick Pule "Ace" Ntsoelengoe OIS (26 February 1952 – 8 May 2006) was a South African soccer player who is widely considered as one of the greatest the country has ever produced. Early life Ntsoelengoe was born to Daniel Ndimande and Margaret Ntsoelengoe. Ntsoelengoe did not grow up with his parents, as they were not yet married when he was born. The Ntsoelengoe surname comes from his grandmother, who raised him until his parents got married. His surname remained unchanged after this. Ntsoelengoe was a close friend to Mbongeni Ngema. Before starting his soccer career, he played tennis and used to practice at a tennis court next to his home. He also played the organ and the guitar, earning the nickname "Quincy Jones". Ntsoelengoe grew up playing soccer with other boys in the street.
