National Prize Of The GDR
The National Prize of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) (german: Nationalpreis der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik) was an award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) given out in three different classes for scientific, artistic, and other meritorious achievement. With scientific achievements, it was often given to entire research groups rather than individual scientists. History The National Prize was awarded on 7 October, "Day of the Republic" (german: Tag der Republik) every year since 1949. It was given for "outstanding creative work in the fields of science and technology, important mathematical and scientific discoveries and technological inventions, the introduction of new working and production methods" and "outstanding works and achievements in the areas of art and literature." Cuno Hoffmeister
Cuno Hoffmeister (2 February 1892 – 2 January 1968) was a German astronomer, observer and discoverer of variable stars, comets and minor planets, and founder of Sonneberg Observatory. Born in Sonneberg in 1892 to Carl and Marie Hoffmeister, Cuno Hoffmeister obtained his first telescope in 1905 and became an avid amateur astronomer. After his father lost most of his money in 1914, Hoffmeister had to leave school in 1916 to start an apprenticeship in his father's company. During this time he continued to study spherical mathematics and trigonometry. In April 1915 he had the opportunity to substitute as the assistant of Ernst Hartwig at ''Remeis Observatory'' in Bamberg while the current holder of the position was drafted, mainly working on observations of meteors and variable stars. Erwin Strittmatter
Erwin Strittmatter (14 August 1912 – 31 January 1994) was a German writer. Strittmatter was one of the most famous writers in the GDR. Biography Strittmatter was born the son of a baker and foods wholesaler. Between 1924 and 1930 he attended the secondary school in Spremberg which has subsequently been named after him. His left his school early due to shortage of money, and at the age of 17 he started an apprenticeship as a baker. Later Strittmatter worked as baker, waiter, chauffeur, zookeeper and unskilled laborer. In 1940 he volunteered to the Waffen-SS but was rejected. Instead, in March 1941 he was drafted into the Ordnungspolizei in the ''SS-Polizei-Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 18'', which operated under the control of the Waffen-SS and which was involved in the deportation of Jews from Athens. Ernst Bloch
Ernst Simon Bloch (; July 8, 1885 – August 4, 1977; pseudonyms: Karl Jahraus, Jakob Knerz) was a German Marxist philosopher. Bloch was influenced by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and Karl Marx, as well as by apocalyptic and religious thinkers such as Thomas Müntzer, Paracelsus, and Jacob Böhme. He established friendships with György Lukács, Bertolt Brecht, Kurt Weill, Walter Benjamin, and Theodor W. Adorno. Bloch's work focuses on an optimistic teleology of the history of mankind. Life Bloch was born in Ludwigshafen, the son of a Jewish railway-employee. After studying philosophy, he married Else von Stritzky, daughter of a Baltic brewer in 1913, who died in 1921. His second marriage with Linda Oppenheimer lasted only a few years. His third wife was Karola Piotrowska, a Polish architect, whom he married in 1934 in Vienna. Ehm Welk
Emil "Ehm" Welk (August 29, 1884 – December 19, 1966) was a German journalist, writer, professor and founder of ''Volkshochschulen'' (adult education centres). He became known for his work ''Die Heiden von Kummerow'' (''The Heathens of Kummerow'') and used Thomas Trimm as a pseudonym. Life Welk was born as the son of a farmer in Biesenbrow (now part of Angermünde), Province of Brandenburg, Brandenburg. After frequenting the village school, the 16-year-old moved away from home, completed a commercial education, worked on the sea and as a journalist for several papers, e.g. in Braunschweig, Brunswick for the ''Braunschweiger Allgemeiner Anzeiger'', whose editor-in-chief he was from 1910 on to 1919. Karl Max Schneider
Karl Max Schneider (13 March 1887 - 26 October 1955) was an East German zoologist who served as director for the Leipzig Zoo from 1934 till his death. He was an expert on lions and their biology and was responsible for coining the behavioural term " flehmen". Biography Schneider was born in Callenberg, Lichtenstein, one of six siblings in a merchant family. Aenne Goldschmidt
Aenne Goldschmidt ( Michel; 8 November 1920 – 24 January 2020) was a Swiss expressionist dancer, choreographer, and pedagogue. She was the first dance artist to receive the National Prize of the German Democratic Republic. Biography Aenne Michel was born on 8 November 1920 in Bern, Switzerland. She trained at Emmy Sauerbeck's dance school in Bern and worked as a freelance dance artist. In the 1930s and 1940s she was active in Communist circles, even after the Communist Party was banned by the Swiss government. In 1944 she and her husband, musicologist Harry Goldschmidt, were among the founding members of the Swiss Party of Labour. Due to their communist views they left Switzerland and moved to East Germany in 1949. Later that year she choreographed a piece for the World Festival of Youth and Students in Budapest. Eduard Model Accessories is a Czech manufacturer of plastic models and finescale model accessories.
