National Prize For Sciences (Chile)
The National Prize for Sciences ( es, Premio Nacional de Ciencias) was an award that was part of the National Prize of Chile until 1992. It was created by law 16746, promulgated on 24 January 1968, and published in the ''Official Journal'' on 14 February of the same year. This made the National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research (CONICYT) an autonomous body with legal personhood. This prize was granted to the Chilean scientist or team of scientists whose work in the field of pure or applied sciences was entitled to such distinction (per Article 2 of Law 16746). Initially it was granted annually, being modified by Law 17595 of 1972, which ordered that it would be given every two years. In 1992, through Law 19169, it was replaced by the National Prizes for Exact Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Applied Sciences and Technologies. The National Prize of Chile ( es, Premio Nacional de Chile) is the collective name given to a set of awards granted by the government of Chile through the Ministry of Education and, as of 2003, by the National Council of Culture and the Arts. They are presented by the President of the Republic at an official ceremony held at La Moneda Palace. Héctor Croxatto
Héctor Croxatto Rezzio (3 July 1908—28 September 2010) was a Chilean physiologist. He won the Chilean National Prize for Sciences in 1979. He was a Member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. Raised in Temuco, he studied medicine at the University of Chile in Santiago, where he received his medical degree in 1930. Physiology, biology and biochemistry were the bulk of his research interests. For two decades he taught physiology at the Instituto de Educación Física y Técnica of Casa de Bello. Later, he was dean of the medical faculty of the University of Chile. In 1969 he joined the Academy of Science of Chile. Hermann Niemeyer Fernández (26 October 1918 – 7 June 1991) was a well-known Chilean scientist he did much to establish biochemistry as a research discipline in Chile. In 1983 he received the Premio Nacional de Ciencias de Chile, National Science Prize for his major advances in biochemistry in the fields of bioenergetics, metabolic regulation of enzymes, and studies of metabolism in liver cells. The National Prize for Applied and Technological Sciences ( es, Premio Nacional de Ciencias Aplicadas y Tecnológicas) was created in 1992 as one of the replacements for the National Prize for Sciences under Law 19169.
