National People's Power
National People's Power (NPP), or Jathika Jana Balawegaya, is an electoral coalition in Sri Lanka. It was established in 2015 by Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna. It consists of 28 political parties and other organisations. It contests in elections under the compass logo. Anura Kumara Dissanayake is currently the leader of the electoral coalition and Lakshman Nipuna Arachchi is the general secretary. History The NPP was formed by the members of the radical leftist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and 27 other parties, worker unions, women's rights groups and youth organizations including members of the ethnic communities. 2019 election As the 19th Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka was passed, opposition parties were nearly strong as the ruling which elects the president. Local Government In Sri Lanka
Local government is the third and lowest level of government in Sri Lanka – after the Cabinet of Sri Lanka, central government and Provinces of Sri Lanka#Provincial Councils, provincial councils. The local government bodies are collectively known as local authorities. They are responsible for providing a variety of local public services including roads, sanitation, drains, housing, libraries, public parks and recreational facilities. Local authorities are divided into three different groups: Municipal councils of Sri Lanka, municipal councils, Urban councils of Sri Lanka, urban councils and Divisional councils of Sri Lanka, divisional councils (pradeshiya sabha or pradesha sabhai). 2022 Sri Lankan Presidential Election
An indirect presidential election was held in the Parliament of Sri Lanka on 20 July 2022 following the resignation of former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa on 14 July. The president of Sri Lanka was elected by the Parliament of Sri Lanka in a secret ballot to decide who would complete the remainder of Gotabaya Rajapaksa's term. Candidates were nominated in the Parliament on 19 July in advance of the election the following day. Ranil Wickremesinghe won the election with 134 votes and was elected as the ninth President (eighth executive President) of Sri Lanka. Samagi Jana Balawegaya
The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (, ta, ஐக்கிய மக்கள் சக்தி, "United People's Power") is a political alliance that is led by the opposition leader of Sri Lanka, Sajith Premadasa. The alliance was formed with the approval from the working committee of the United National Party (UNP) to contest the 2020 Sri Lankan parliamentary election. On 11 February 2020 the election commission of Sri Lanka announced that they have accepted the party as a recognised political party in Sri Lanka. Ranjith Mandumabandara was named as the General Secretary of the party. Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) and the Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) joined the new alliance on 12 February 2020. 19th Amendment To The Constitution Of Sri Lanka
The 19th Amendment (19A) to the Constitution of Sri Lanka was passed by the 225-member Sri Lankan Parliament with 215 voting in favor, one against, one abstained and seven were absent, on 28 April 2015. The amendment envisages the dilution of many powers of Executive Presidency, which had been in force since 1978. It is the most revolutionary reform ever applied to the Constitution of Sri Lanka since JR Jayawardhane became the first Executive President of Sri Lanka in 1978. The Sri Lanka Rūpavāhinī Corporation ( si, ශ්රී ලංකා රූපවාහිනී සංස්ථාව; ta, இலங்கை ரூபவாகினி கூட்டுத்தாபனம்), also known as Jathika Rupavahini (lit. National Television) or simply as Rupavahini, is the national television network of Sri Lanka.
