National People's Congress Election, 2012 (Hong Kong)
The election for the Hong Kong deputies to the 12th National People's Congress (NPC) was held on 19 December 2012. 36 Hong Kong deputies were elected by an electoral college composed of 1,621 members. Overview The election took place at the second plenary meeting of the 12th National People's Congress election meeting on 19 December. National People's Congress
The National People's Congress of the People's Republic of China (NPC; ), or simply the National People's Congress, is constitutionally the supreme state authority and the national legislature of the People's Republic of China. With 2,980 members in 2018, it is the largest legislative body in the world. The National People's Congress meets in full session for roughly two weeks each year and votes on important pieces of legislation and personnel assignments among other things, and due to the temporary nature of the plenary sessions, most of NPC's power is delegated to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPCSC), which consists of about 170 legislators and meets in continuous bi-monthly sessions, when its parent NPC is not in session. Fanny Law Fan Chiu-fun
Fanny Law Fan Chiu-fun (; ' Fan; born 24 February 1953) is a former non-official member of the Executive Council of Hong Kong. She was awarded the Grand Bauhinia Medal (GBM) by the Hong Kong SAR Government in 2017. Law held the posts of Secretary for Education and Manpower (until 2002), and Permanent Secretary for Education and Manpower (until 2006). In late 2006, she was appointed Commissioner, Independent Commission Against Corruption. She resigned from the post following a government inquiry into interference with academic freedom at the Hong Kong Institute of Education while she was Permanent Secretary. However the Court of First Instance held that Law did not violate the institute's right to academic freedom when she contacted academics directly. Bernard Charnwut Chan GBM GBS JP (; 11 January 1965), is a Hong Kong politician and businessman. He served as Non-official Convenor of the Executive Council from 2017 to 2022. Background Chan was born in Hong Kong with family roots in Chaoyang, Canton, also known by his Thai name Charnwut Sophonpanich ( th, ชาญวุฒิ โสภณพนิช; ). Civic Party
The Civic Party (CP) is a pro-democracy liberal political party in Hong Kong. It is currently chaired by barrister Alan Leong. The party was formed in 2006 on the basis of the Basic Law Article 45 Concern Group, which was derived from the Basic Law Article 23 Concern Group that rooted in its opposition to the proposed legislation of the Article 23 of the Basic Law of Hong Kong. Paul Zimmerman (politician)
Paulus Johannes Zimmerman (born 8 November 1958), better known as Paul Zimmerman, is a Dutch-born Hong Kong environmentalist, politician and businessman. He is a member of the Southern District Council for Pokfulam and CEO of Designing Hong Kong, a group that advocates better urban design. Early life and business career Zimmerman was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands in 1958, and grew up in the town of Woerden. He set up a student union in high school and joined the editorial board of an underground newspaper. When he was 17, in response to the dismissal of several popular teachers, Zimmerman took part in a demonstration in which protesters barricaded the building. Southern District Council
Southern District Council is the district council for the Southern District in Hong Kong. It is one of 18 such councils. The Southern District Council currently consists of 17 members, of which the district is divided into 17 constituencies, electing a total of 17 members. The last election was held on 24 November 2019. History The Southern District Council was established on 4 December 1981 under the name of the Southern District Board as the result of the colonial Governor Murray MacLehose's District Administration Scheme reform. Hong Kong Professional Teachers' Union
The Hong Kong Professional Teachers' Union (HKPTU) was a pro-democracy trade union, professional association and social concern group in Hong Kong. Until its disbandment in 2021, it was the largest teachers' organisation in Hong Kong with some 95,000 members at the time of disbandment. Mission The PTU was known to be politically liberal, socially activist, and concerned with the defence of the legal rights of teachers. Pan-democrats
The pro-democracy camp, also known as the pan-democracy camp, is a political alignment in Hong Kong that supports increased democracy, namely the universal suffrage of the Chief Executive and the Legislative Council as given by the Basic Law under the "One Country, Two Systems" framework. The pro-democrats generally embrace liberal values such as rule of law, human rights, civil liberties and social justice, though their economic positions vary.
