National Middle Schools' Forum
The National Middle Schools' Forum (NMSF) is a national education association dedicated exclusively to the promotion and support of middle schools in England. The organisation was first formed in 1991 as the Inter-Lea Middle Schools' Forum. The initial organisation was in part due to the recent Audit Commission response which proposed a rationalisation of primary education to remove middle schools. This process had started during the early 1980s and has continued throughout the 1990s and 2000s (decade). Much of the support aspect of the forum continues to focus on local education authorities where proposals are under consideration for the removal of three-tier education systems. It is the current aim of the forum to provide a focal point for networking and discussion among the remaining Middle Schools in England. List Of Middle Schools In England
Middle schools in England are defined in English and Welsh law as being schools in which the age range of pupils starts younger than 10 years and six months and finishes older than 12 years of age. The number of middle schools, including combined schools for children aged between 5 and 12, reached a peak of over 1400 by 1983. In 2019 there were 107 middle schools remaining in England, operating in just 14 local authority areas. History Middle schools were permitted by the Education Act of 1964, which made additional arrangements to allow for schools which crossed the traditional primary-secondary threshold at age 11. Notably, these changes did not define a new type of school, but rather permitted a variation on existing schemes, while providing for regulations which allowed the Secretary of State to determine whether such schools should be treated as primary or secondary. Audit Commission (United Kingdom)
The Audit Commission was a statutory corporation in the United Kingdom. The commission's primary objective was to appoint auditors to a range of local public bodies in England, set the standards for auditors and oversee their work. The commission closed on 31 March 2015, with its functions being transferred to the voluntary, not-for-profit or private sector. On 13 August 2010, it was leaked to the media, ahead of an official announcement, that the commission was to be scrapped. In 2009-10 the commission cost the central government £28 million to run, with the remainder of its income coming from audit fees charged to local public bodies. Local Education Authority
Local education authorities (LEAs) were local councils in England that are responsible for education within their jurisdiction. The term was used to identify which council (district or county) is locally responsible for education in a system with several layers of local government. Local education authorities were not usually ad hoc or standalone authorities, although the former Inner London Education Authority was one example of this. Three-tier Education
Three-tier education refers to those structures of schooling, which exist in some parts of England, where pupils are taught in three distinct school types as they progress through the education system. Terminology In a three-tier local education authority children begin their compulsory education in a first school or lower school, which caters for children up to the age of 8 or 9. Qualifications And Curriculum Authority
The Qualifications and Curriculum Development Agency (QCDA) was a charity, and an executive non-departmental public body (NDPB) of the Department for Education. In England and Northern Ireland, the QCDA maintained and developed the National Curriculum and associated assessments, tests and examinations, advising the minister formerly known as the Secretary of State for Education on these matters. Regulatory functions regarding examination and assessment boards have been transferred to Ofqual, an independent regulator. Education and qualifications in Scotland and Wales are the responsibility of the Scottish Government and Welsh Government and their agencies.
