National Indigenous Music Awards 2018
The National Indigenous Music Awards 2018 are the 15th annual National Indigenous Music Awards. The nominations were announced on 9 July 2018 and the awards ceremony was held on 11 August 2018. 2018 was seen as a strong year for Indigenous music with an ARIA number 1 album, national tours, Eurovision Song Contest performance appearances, Triple J Hottest 100, 2018 placements and acts playing festivals across the country. The 2018 National Indigenous Music Awards saw a growth in both audience and nominations. NIMA Reference Group Chair Warren H. Yirrmal
Yirrmal Marika (born 1993), known mononymously Yirrmal, is an Indigenous Australian vocalist. A Yolngu man, his music features traditional sounds and elements of Yolŋu music. Early life Yirrmal Marika was born in 1993 in Yirrkala in the Rirratjingu clan and began learning music at age 11. Personal life Yirrmal's father Witiyana Marika was a singer and dancer in Yothu Yindi and is related to Dr Gurrumul Yunupingu on his mother's side. Yirrmal cites his grandfather and former lead singer of Yothu Yindi, Dr Yunupingu as his biggest influence saying "He was my inspiration since I was a kid. He did great things for all Australians. There are a lot of other Indigenous people that I look up to also – people such as Archie Roach, Gurrumul, Saltwater Band, Dan Sultan, Jessica Mauboy and Rrawun Maymuru. Djarimirri
''Djarimirri'' (subtitled ''Child of the Rainbow'') is the first posthumous album and fourth studio album from Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu. The album was completed just weeks before his passing in July 2017 and presents traditional songs and harmonised chants from his traditional Yolngu life with orchestral arrangements. The album was released on 13 April 2018 and debuted at number one on the ARIA Charts, becoming Yunupingu's first number-one album. It is also the first time an Australian indigenous language album has peaked at number one, and he is only the second Aboriginal artist to have a number-one album, following Jessica Mauboy's '' The Secret Daughter: Songs from the Original TV Series'' in October 2016. Gurrumul
Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu (22 January 1971 – 25 July 2017), commonly known as Gurrumul and also referred to since his death as Dr G. Yunupingu, was an Aboriginal Australian musician of the Yolŋu peoples. A multi-instrumentalist, he played drums, keyboards, guitar (a right-hand-strung guitar played left-handed) and didgeridoo, but it was the clarity of his singing voice that attracted rave reviews. He sang stories of his land both in Yolŋu languages such as Gaalpu, Gumatj or Djambarrpuynu, a dialect related to Gumatj, and in English. Although his solo career brought him wider acclaim, he was also formerly a member of Yothu Yindi and later of Saltwater Band. ''Killer'' is the fourth studio album by Australian musician Dan Sultan, released in July 2017. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2017, the album was nominated for three awards; ARIA Award for Best Male Artist, Best Rock Album and Best Independent Album. Daniel Leo Sultan (born 1983) is an Australian alternative rock singer-songwriter and guitarist, actor and author. Isaiah Firebrace
Isaiah Firebrace (born 21 November 1999) is an Australian singer who won the eighth season of ''The X Factor Australia'' in 2016. He then represented Australia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 with the song "Don't Come Easy", where he finished 9th. Emily Wurramara
Emily Wurramara is an Indigenous Australian singer and songwriter. In 2018, Wurramara was nominated for Best Blues and Roots Album at the ARIA Awards. Early life Wurramara is a Warnindhilyagwa woman from Groote Eylandt, off the Northern Territory of Australia. She grew up in Brisbane. Electric Fields are an Aboriginal Australian electronic music duo made up of vocalist Zaachariaha Fielding and keyboard player and producer Michael Ross. Archie Roach
Archibald William Roach (8 January 1956 – 30 July 2022) was an Australian singer, songwriter and Aboriginal Australian, Aboriginal activist. Often referred to as "Uncle Archie", Roach was a Gunditjmara and Western Bundjalung people, Bundjalung elder who campaigned for the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. His wife and musical partner was the singer Ruby Hunter (1955–2010). Roach first became known for the song "Took the Children Away", which featured on his debut solo album, ''Charcoal Lane'', in 1990. He toured around the globe, headlining and opening shows for Joan Armatrading, Bob Dylan, Billy Bragg, Tracy Chapman, Suzanne Vega and Patti Smith.
