National Indigenous Music Awards 2015
The National Indigenous Music Awards 2015 are the 12th annual National Indigenous Music Awards. The nominations were announced on 10 July 2015 and the awards ceremony was held on 22 July 2015. For the first time in National Indigenous Music Awards history two artists were awarded the Artist of the Year prize; Jessica Mauboy and Dan Sultan. An equal number of votes came in from the voting panel for each artist and the decision was made to honor both parties with this prestigious national award. Executive Director of MusicNT & NIMA, Mark Smith, said "This year's finalists offer a diverse breath of fresh air within the mainstream music industry. They integrate a rich cultural heritage that illustrates an intimate connection to place and a respect for environment that resonates with the wider community. Blekbala Mujik
Blekbala Mujik (Black People's Music) are an Australian rock, reggae group formed in Barunga, Northern Territory in 1986. They fused rock and reggae with a pop, dance sound and have support base for their live shows and recordings. They are cited in the ''World Music: The Rough Guide'' as next best known to Yothu Yindi. The band sings in English and in Kriol (a creole language based on English and Australian Aboriginal languages). At the ARIA Music Awards of 1996 their album, ''Blekbala Mujik'' (May 1996), was nominated for Best Indigenous Release. History Blekbala Mujik were formed in 1986 in the rural community of Barunga (Gulin-Gulin) in central Arnhem Land. The founding member, Peter Miller on vocals and guitar, lives in Alice Springs, and was a member of the Northern Land Council. Djalu Gurruwiwi
Djalu Gurruwiwi, also written Djalu ( – 12 May 2022), was a Yolngu man from Arnhem Land in northern Australia, known worldwide for his skill as a player, maker and spiritual keeper of the yiḏaki (didgeridoo). He was also a respected artist, with works in several galleries. Life Gurruwiwi was born at the mission station on Wirriku Island (also known as Jirgarri), one of the smaller islands in the Wessel Islands group. He has also self-reported being born on Milingimbi Island (also known as Yurruwi, in the Crocodile Islands), with both of these island groups being off Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory, Australia. His date of birth is uncertain (the missionaries recorded his and two brothers as having the same birthdate – officially 1 January 1930), estimated 1940 or probably earlier. Radical Son
David Leha, known professionally as Radical Son, is a Kamilaroi and Tongan singer. He was part of the GetUp Mob, which released a cover version of "From Little Things Big Things Grow" in May 2008 – it reached No. 4 on the ARIA Singles Chart. Other members of the temporary group were the song's writers Kev Carmody and Paul Kelly together with Urthboy, Missy Higgins, Mia Dyson, Jane Tyrrell, Dan Sultan, Joel Wenitong and Ozi Batla. Radical Son's second studio album, ''Cause 'n Effect'' was released through Wantok music in October 2014 and features appearances from Archie Roach, Emma Donovan, and Deline Briscoe. Emma Donovan
Emma Donovan (born 1981) is an Aboriginal Australian singer and songwriter. She is a member of the renowned musical Donovan family. She started her singing career at age seven with her uncle's band, the Donovans. In 2000, she became a founding member of Stiff Gins, leaving the band three years later to release the solo album ''Changes'' in 2004. Briggs (rapper)
Adam Briggs (born 28 August 1986), who performs as Briggs and self-describes as Senator Briggs (although not a member of the Australian Senate), is an Indigenous Australian rapper, record label owner, comedy writer, actor, and author. Briggs became well known as a "solo rapper", signing with Golden Era Records in 2009, before co-founding the hip hop duo A.B. Original in 2016. As a solo artist, Briggs has released one EP, ''Homemade Bombs'' in 2009, and two albums, 2010's ''The Blacklist'' and 2014's ''Sheplife''. Thelma Amelina Plumbe (born 21 December 1994), known professionally as Thelma Plum, is an Aboriginal Australian singer, songwriter, guitarist and musician from Delungra, New South Wales. Her father is renowned lore-man Paul Winanga-li Gii Spearim. Her debut album, ''Better in Blak'', was released on 30 July 2019 and peaked at number 4 on the ARIA Albums Chart. Yirrmal Marika (born 1993), known mononymous person, mononymously Yirrmal, is an Indigenous Australian vocalist. A Yolngu man, his music features traditional sounds and elements of Yolŋu languages, Yolŋu music. Early life Yirrmal Marika was born in 1993 in Yirrkala in the Rirratjingu clan and began learning music at age 11. Personal life Yirrmal's father Witiyana Marika was a singer and dancer in Yothu Yindi and is related to Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, Dr Gurrumul Yunupingu on his mother's side. Yirrmal cites his grandfather and former lead singer of Yothu Yindi, Mandawuy Yunupingu, Dr Yunupingu as his biggest influence saying "He was my inspiration since I was a kid.
