National Indigenous Music Awards 2009
The National Indigenous Music Awards 2009 were the 6th annual National Indigenous Music Awards, first under its new name after being previously called ''NT Indigenous Music Awards''. The awards ceremony was held on 21 August 2009. Hall of Fame Inductees * Sammy Butcher, Tableland Drifters and David Asera Sammy Butcher was born at Papunya, Northern Territory in Central Australia. He formed the Warumpi Band with George Burarrwanga, Neil Murray and Gordon Butcher in the late 1970s. Tableland Drifters was formed in 1985 and perform country rock music across the Northern Territory. David Asera, a mentor, musician and helped with Road Safety All Stars and Keep Australia Beautiful. Neil Murray (Australian Musician)
Neil James Murray (born 1956) is an Australian musician, singer-songwriter-guitarist and writer. He was a founding member of the Warumpi Band (1980–88, 1995–2000) which was the first major influential Aboriginal rock group with mostly Indigenous members. Murray was recognised as one of Australia's foremost songwriters at the APRA Awards of 1995 by winning Song of the Year for " My Island Home". Murray has had a solo career since 1989 and had issued eight studio albums by 2014. Murray regularly performed throughout Australia, either with a backing band, The Rainmakers, or solo. He undertook a series of performances with Shane Howard (ex-Goanna), as 2songmen from 2006 to 2007. 2009 In Australian Music

Lonely Boys
Lonely Boys is a band from Ngukurr, Northern Territory, a remote aboriginal community, Ngukurr on the Roper River in Arnhem Land. A six-piece guitar inspired rock band, they play a mix of punk, rock and metal. In 2006, they won the Barunga Festival battle of the bands, and in the same year also appeared at the Groovin’ the Moo festival in Darwin. In 2015, they headlined at the Barunga Festival. The group won the 2016 NT Rock Song of the Year for ‘Murray Island’ from their EP ''The Hunter.'' ''Gurrumul'' is the debut solo album for Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu. It is performed in a mixture of both Yolngu and English. It reached number three on the ARIA charts, won ARIA awards for Best World Music Album and Best Independent Release and won a Deadly for Album of the Year. Been Waiting
''Been Waiting'' is the debut studio album by Australian recording artist Jessica Mauboy, released on 22 November 2008 by Sony Music Australia. While Mauboy was still a member of the girl group Young Divas, she began to work on what became ''Been Waiting''. Garrangali Band
The Garrangali Band, also known as Garrangali, is an Aboriginal Australian musical group from the tiny homeland community, or outstation, of Baniyala in East Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory of Australia. Garrangali means "home of the crocodile" in the Yolngu language, in which they sing some lyrics. Their musical style has been variously described as reggae, saltwater reggae and saltwater ska. The band came on to the scene in 2009, when they were nominated for the Emerging Artist award at the National Indigenous Music Awards 2009. At the ceremony in 2010 they won two categories: album of the year with their debut, ''Crocodile Nest'', and song of the year for "Sea Rights". Tjupi Band is a Central Australian Indigenous band from the community of Papunya, Northern Territory. They sing in Luritja and English and play desert reggae. George Burarrwanga
George Rrurrambu Burarrwanga (1957 – 10 June 2007), known in life as George Rrurrambu and George Djilangya, was known as the frontman of Warumpi Band, an Aboriginal rock band. Burarrwanga was a Yolngu man, born in the remote homeland of Matamata in the ceremonial women's birthing area under a tree, like many babies from generations before him. He was then raised in the community of Galiwinku on Elcho Island, off Arnhem Land. Burarrwanga's musical career began as a child through the education of ancestral songlines which his father, Charlie Matjuwuy Burarrwanga, mastered in depth of historical knowledge, pitch, tone and feeling. Matjuwuy was to become the most respected and sought-after Yolngu ceremonial singer across Indigenous Australian communities until his death in 2018 in his 80s.
