National Independent Private Schools Association
National Independent Private Schools Association (NIPSA) is an organization that accredits primary and secondary proprietary schools in the United States and internationally. NIPSA was formed in 1983, in northern California, by a small group of enthusiastic educational professionals dedicated to the formation of a professional association of proprietary schools; the three co-founders were Charles Lavaroni, Ralph Gioveniello, and Pat O'Donnell. In addition to accreditation, NIPSA clinically certifies therapeutic schools and programs. As a leader in the field of educational therapeutic certification, NIPSA also certifies non-profit schools and programs who are dually accredited by one of their co-accreditors. NIPSA is also a SEVIS recognized agency, so NIPSA schools may have applications from international students. Pre-tertiary-education accreditation is a type of quality assurance process used in the United States under which services and operations of pre-tertiary schools and educational institutions or programs are evaluated by an external body to determine if applicable standards are met. History The initial focus of education accreditation was on secondary schools. For example, the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools was organized in 1895 with the objective of "the establishment of close relations between the colleges and secondary schools." Better articulation between the two levels of education was a particular focus. The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) is a program within U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which is under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, to manage foreign students and exchange visitors in the United States through the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). The SEVP encompasses the F status (for foreign students in the United States in academic programs and their dependents), J status (for exchange visitors in the United States and their dependents), and M status (for foreign students in the United States in vocational programs and their dependents). The exchange visitor part of the program (J visa) is managed by the U.S. Department of State, although the SEVIS system is maintained by ICE.
