National Dance Institute
National Dance Institute (NDI) was founded in 1976 by New York City Ballet principal dancer Jacques d'Amboise. NDI works with mainstream, bilingual, and special education classes. NDI classes are taught by professional artists, who work with 6,500 New York City school children each week throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. Most NDI dancers come from low-income communities, and all NDI programs are offered to children free of charge. Among NDI dancers, 32% are Latino, 24% Asian, 23% Caucasian, 19% African-American, and 2% other non-white minority groups. In 2001, Carole Valleskey, formerly a principal dancer with the Joffrey Ballet, founded California Dance Institute as a West Coast affiliate of NDI. Jacques D'Amboise (dancer)
Jacques d'Amboise (born Joseph Jacques Ahearn, July 28, 1934 – May 2, 2021) was an American ballet dancer, choreographer, actor, and educator. He joined the New York City Ballet in 1949 and was named principal dancer in 1953, and throughout his time with the company he danced 24 roles for George Balanchine. He also made film appearances, including ''Seven Brides for Seven Brothers'' and ''Carousel''. He choreographed 17 ballets for the New York City Ballet and retired from performing in 1984. D'Amboise founded the National Dance Institute in 1976 to promote dance to children. His work with the institute was featured in the documentary, ''He Makes Me Feel Like Dancin''', which won an Academy Award and a Primetime Emmy Award. He received the MacArthur Fellowship in 1990, the Kennedy Center Honors in 1995, and the National Medal of Arts in 1998. Joffrey Ballet
The Joffrey Ballet is one of the premier dance companies and training institutions in the world today. California Dance Institute
California Dance Institute (CDI) was founded in 2001 by Joffrey Ballet principal dancer Carole Valleskey. CDI was founded as a West Coast affiliate of Jacques d'Amboise's National Dance Institute. CDI teachers have all been trained in the rigorous NDI teaching methodology. Having served over 17,000 in Los Angeles County, CDI's in-school and after-school programs provide a structured set of lessons in rhythm, music and movement. The schools served by CDI are in ethnically diverse, low-income neighborhoods. At the end of each school year, the students dance in a professionally staged production with live musical accompaniment, full costumes, and lighted backdrops. According to founder Carole Valleskey, "Virtues are habits, and dance, as taught by CDI, is habituation in many of the skills of learning, as well as the components of good character. Yaniv "Nev" Schulman ( ; born September 26, 1984) is an American TV host and producer. National Dance Institute New Mexico
National Dance Institute New Mexico (NDI New Mexico) is a non-profit arts education organization, founded in 1994 by Jacques d'Amboise and Catherine Oppenheimer and based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The organization, through both in-school and after school programs, employs the medium of dance to instill values and habits in its students that are meant to help them succeed in academics and everyday life. Fees for its after school programs operate on a sliding scale basis, with many students qualifying for free tuition based on parents' income.
