The National Ballet Theater of Puerto Rico ( es, Balleteatro Nacional de Puerto Rico) is one of the leading Ballet company, ballet companies in Puerto Rico. It was formed by former members of ''Ballet Concierto de Puerto Rico'' after the company was paralyzed by a dancers' strike in 2004. They performed for the first time in April 2005 at the Francisco Arrivà Theater in San Juan, Puerto Rico, San Juan under the direction of Miguel Campaneria. The company is located in the city of Guaynabo. A ballet company is a type of dance troupe which performs classical ballet, neoclassical ballet, and/or contemporary ballet in the European tradition, plus managerial and support staff. Francisco Arrivà (June 24, 1915 – February 8, 2007), a.k.a. ''Paco,'' was a writer, poet and playwright known as "The Father of the Puerto Rican Theater." Early years Arrivà (birth name: Francisco Arrivà Alegria ) was born in Santurce, a section of the city San Juan, Puerto Rico, to a Spanish father and Puerto Rican mother. Miguel Campaneria
Miguel Campaneria is a Cuban ballet dancer and choreographer. Life He started his ballet training at the National Ballet Academy of Cuba under Alicia Alonso and Azari Plisetski. He joined the National Ballet of Cuba where he became a soloist. Later on, he won the bronze medal in the junior category at the International Ballet Competition in Varna, Bulgaria. He has danced with American Ballet Theatre, Pennsylvania Ballet, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, and was a principal dancer with the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater and Ballets de San Juan. In the 1990s he started teaching and served as ballet master of Ballet Concierto de Puerto Rico. A principal dancer (often shortened to principal) is a dancer at the highest rank within a professional dance company, particularly a ballet company. A principal may be male or female. The position is similar to that of '' soloist''; however, principals regularly perform not only solos, but also pas de deux. Principal dancers can be hired into a dance company or can also be a company dancer that is a corps de ballet dancer that gets promoted from within the company. That process can take multiple performance seasons or even years to achieve based on skill level and company interest.
