Nathaniel Littlefield
Nathaniel Littlefield (September 20, 1804 – August 15, 1882) was a United States representative from Maine. Biography Nathaniel Swett Littlefield was born in Wells, Massachusetts (now in Maine) on September 20, 1804. He attended the common schools, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1827 and commenced practice in Bridgton. He served as postmaster from 1827 to 1841, and held local office, including selectman. He was appointed secretary of the Maine State Senate. He was elected to the Maine Senate, and served 1837 to 1839. In 1838 he served as the Senate's President pro Tempore. Littlefield was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-seventh Congress (March 4, 1841 – March 3, 1843) from Maine's 5th congressional district. After his term he returned to Bridgton and resumed the practice of law. William Pitt Fessenden
William Pitt Fessenden (October 16, 1806September 8, 1869) was an American politician from the U.S. state of Maine. Fessenden was a Whig (later a Republican) and member of the Fessenden political family. He served in the United States House of Representatives and Senate before becoming Secretary of the Treasury under President Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War. Fessenden then re-entered the Senate, where he died in office in 1869. A lawyer, he was a leading antislavery Whig in Maine; in Congress, he fought the Slave Power, plantation owners who controlled Southern states. He built an antislavery coalition in the state legislature that elected him to the U.S. Senate; it became Maine's Republican organization. In the Senate, Fessenden played a central role in the debates on Kansas, denouncing the expansion of slavery. John Appleton
John Appleton (February 11, 1815 – August 22, 1864) was an American lawyer, politician and diplomat who served as the United States' first '' chargé d'affaires'' to Bolivia, and later as special envoy to Great Britain and Russia. Born in Beverly, Massachusetts, Appleton graduated from Bowdoin College in 1834 and attended Harvard Law School from 1835 to 1836. On leaving Harvard, he became a barrister and newspaper editor while maintaining a vigorous involvement in Democratic politics. In 1840 he was appointed as registrar of probates for Cumberland County, Maine, and in 1845 became Chief Clerk for the United States Department of the Navy. In January 1848 Appleton was promoted to Chief Clerk of the State Department, but resigned in March when he was named as the United States' first '' chargé d'affaires'' to Bolivia. Asa Clapp (March 6, 1805 – March 22, 1891) was a United States representative from Maine. Biography Asa William Henry Clapp, son of wealthy merchant and state legislator Asa Clapp (1762–1848) was born in Portland on March 6, 1805. He graduated from Norwich University in 1823. He engaged as a merchant in foreign and domestic commerce in Portland. He was elected as a Democrat to the 30th Congress (March 4, 1847 – March 3, 1849). He was not a candidate for renomination. He was a delegate to the 1848 and in 1848 and 1852 Democratic National Conventions. Benjamin White (Maine Politician)
Benjamin White (May 13, 1790 – June 7, 1860) was a U.S. Representative from Maine. Born in Goshen, Massachusetts (now Vienna, Maine), White attended the common schools. He moved to Winthrop, in 1802 and was employed on a farm until 1808 when he entered Farmington Academy. He taught school for several years. During the War of 1812, he was in Augusta, and assisted in raising troops, later serving as a noncommissioned officer with troops stationed at Castine and Eastport. He again engaged in teaching in Montville, Maine, until 1821, when he also engaged in the sawmill business and agricultural pursuits. He served as town selectman. He served as member of the Maine House of Representatives in 1829, 1841, and 1842. White was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-eighth Congress (March 4, 1843 – March 3, 1845).
