Dalton Vocational School Historic District, also known as the Bartlett Agricultural and Vocational School Historic District, is a national historic district located near Dalton, Chariton County, Missouri. The district encompasses nine contributing buildings and one contributing site of an African American agricultural and vocational school that served Chariton and surrounding counties during the first half of the 20th century. Plans for the school were initiated in 1905 and after it opened it developed and operated until 1956. Building at the site include the Bartlett Classroom Building (1938), Busch Building (1909), Principals Cottage (c. 1930), Cafeteria (c. 1920), Machine Shop (c. 1920), two sheds, a barn, and a poultry house, along with 123 acres of property. ansite map/ref> Nathaniel C. History of Dalton Lewis and Clark made camp at what would later be known as the Cut-Off on June 12, 1804, and it was here that the expedition met with Pierre Dorion, a man who had reportedly been with the Sioux for 20 years and was thought to have some influence upon them. Chariton County, Missouri
Chariton County is a county located in the north-central portion of the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2020 census, the population was 7,408. Its county seat is Keytesville. The county was organized November 16, 1820, from part of Howard County and is named for the Chariton River. History Chariton County was settled primarily from the states of the Upper South, especially Kentucky and Tennessee. They brought slaves and slaveholding traditions with them, and they quickly started cultivating crops similar to those in Middle Tennessee and Kentucky: hemp and tobacco. Tuskegee University (Tuskegee or TU), formerly known as the Tuskegee Institute, is a private, historically black land-grant university in Tuskegee, Alabama.
