Nathan Elams Cockrell (September 27, 1833 – June 3, 1859) was a founder of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Early life Nathan Elams Cockrell was born on September 27, 1833 in Livingston, Alabama.''A Register of the Officers and Students of the University of Alabama, 1831-1901'', Tuscaloosa, Alabama: University Press of Alabama, 1901, p. 11/ref> His father was Dempsey Cockrell and his mother, Millicent Carpenter. His maternal uncle, Captain Nathan Mullin Carpenter, was the owner of the Everhope Plantation in Eutaw, Alabama. He graduated in 1856. Career Cockrell managed his father's plantation. Later, he became the editor of the ''Livingston Messenger'' newspaper. Death Cockrell died on June 3, 1859. References

Sigma Alpha Epsilon (), commonly known as SAE, is a North American Greek-letter social college Fraternities and sororities in North America, fraternity. It was founded at the University of Alabama on March 9, 1856. Of all existing national social fraternities today, Sigma Alpha Epsilon is the only one founded in the Antebellum Age, Antebellum Southern United States, South. Its national headquarters, the Levere Memorial Temple, was established on the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, in 1929. The fraternity's mission statement is "To promote the highest standards of friendship, scholarship and service for our members based upon the ideals set forth by our Founders and as specifically enunciated in our creed."
