Natalie Zahle
Ida Charlotte Natalie Zahle (11 June 1827 – 11 August 1913) was a Danish reform pedagogue and pioneer of women's education. She founded N. Zahle's School in 1851. Life Her parents were the Roskilde vicar Ernst Sophus Wilhelm Zahle (1797-1837) and Vilhelmine Catharina Louise Böttger (1802–37). After the death of her parents in 1837, she lived first with her mother's parents and then as the foster child of professor and zoologist Daniel Frederik Eschricht (1798–1863) and his wife. She was educated at the girls' school Døtreskolen af 1791 in Copenhagen, and supported herself as a governess. In 1849, she became a student at the newly founded women's teacher seminary Den højere Dannelsesanstalt for Damer. Operated by Annestine Beyer (1795–1884),it was the first school in Denmark to offer women a professional academic education. Theodora Lang
Theodora Wilhelmine Linderstrøm (3 May 1855 – 16 December 1935) was a Danish pioneer in women's education. A member of the New Education Movement, she founded Th. Lang's School in Silkeborg, Denmark, naming it for her father. Biography She was the daughter of the teacher Theodorus Lang (1802–1861) and Ulricha Johanne Linderstrøm (1822–1900). She was educated at home, from 1871–1874 at M. Gøtzsche's higher girls' school () with courses conducted by Louise Westergaard (1826–1880) and from 1881–1882 at N. Zahle's School (), the private school operated by Natalie Zahle (1827–1913). From 1882, she managed (), a girls' school in Silkeborg. In 1886, the first school building was inaugurated. Natalie Zahle Memorial
The Natalie Zahle Memorial is located in Ørsted Park in Copenhagen, Denmark, close to the school that she founded in 1862. The school became a model for all upper secondary girl's schools in the country. The Natalie Zahle Memorial was the first monument in Copenhagen erected in honour of a woman who was not of royal ancestry and had exclusively gained prominence on the basis of her own merit. Description The memorial stands tall and consists of a bronze group sculpture mounted on a low granite plinth. The centerpiece of the bronze sculpture is a bust of Nathalie Zahle on a tall, integrated pedestal. In front of the bust is a figure of a seated female school teacher holding the hand of a young, female student. The teacher holds an open book in her other hand and the girl has a distant, thoughtful look as if she is being examined in her homework. Medal Of Merit (Denmark)
The Medal of Merit ( da, Fortjenstmedaljen) is the oldest extant award medal presented by the Kingdom of Denmark. Established by Christian VII on 16 May 1792, and re-instituted by ordinance of Christian VIII on 24 July 1845, it is a personal award of the Sovereign. Appearance The medal, depending on the version, is made of either gold or silver. The obverse bears the effigy, in profile, of The Queen and the inscription, ''Margareta II – Regina Daniæ''. The reverse bears the single word ''Fortient'', surrounded by an oak leaf wreath. Recipient’s name is engraved on the edge of the medal. This indicates that it is the personal property of the recipient, and is not returned upon death, like the badges of some orders of chivalry.
