Nasturtium (horse)
Nasturtium (1899–1916) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse that was the American Champion Two-Year-Old Colt, top two-year-old colt of 1901. He was a scheduled contender for the 1902 Epsom Derby, but did not run in the race due to illness. Pedigree Nasturtium, a "racy-looking and powerful" chestnut horse standing 15.2 Hand (unit), hands high was bred at James Haggin's Rancho El Paso stud in California and was sired by the imported United Kingdom, British stallion Watercress out of Margerique. Margerique was an unraced mare by the imported British stallion Order out of Margerine, who also foaled another successful racer The Commoner. Racing career Haggin sold Nasturtium as a yearling to Follansbee and William A. Chanler, Chanler, who in turn sold him to Anthony L. Aste for $4,300 at auction in 1901. A stallion is a male horse that has not been gelded (castrated). Stallions follow the conformation and phenotype of their breed, but within that standard, the presence of hormones such as testosterone may give stallions a thicker, "cresty" neck, as well as a somewhat more muscular physique as compared to female horses, known as ''mares'', and castrated males, called ''geldings''. Stamina (horse)
Stamina (1905–1930) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse that was the historical top 2-year-old and 3-year-old filly in the United States in 1907 and 1908, respectively. Through the 1907 racing season, she was trained by future Hall of Fame inductee, John W. Rogers. On the death of Rogers in early 1908, another future Hall of Fame inductee, Jack Joyner, took over. Pedigree Stamina was foaled in 1905 and was sired by the 1901 champion 2-year-old colt, Nasturtium, out of the 1901 co-champion 2-year-old mare, Endurance by Right. Nasturtium was sired by Watercress out of the mare Margerique. Margerique was sired by the imported British stallion Order out of the Algerine-bred mare Margerine. Endurance by Right was sired by the 1886 Belmont and Travers Stakes winner Inspector B. out of the mare Early Morn. Volodyovski
Volodyovski (1898–1917) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a career which lasted from 1900 to 1902, he ran twenty-six times and won seven races. After being one of the leading two-year-olds of 1900, he went on to win The Derby in 1901. His subsequent form was disappointing and he was retired to stud after failing to win in eleven starts as a four-year-old. He made no impact as a stallion. Background Volodyovski, a bay horse with a narrow blaze and a white sock on his left back foot, was owned and bred by Lady Valerie Meux who used the name "Mrs. Theobalds" for her racing interests. The colt was leased for racing to Lord William Beresford. Volodyovski was one of the first crop of foals sired by Florizel II, a high class racehorse and a brother to the Derby winners Persimmon and Diamond Jubilee. Sheepshead Bay Race Track
Sheepshead Bay Race Track was an American Thoroughbred horse racing facility built on the site of the Coney Island Jockey Club at Sheepshead Bay, New York. Early history The racetrack was built by a group of prominent businessmen from the New York City area who formed the Coney Island Jockey Club in 1879. Led by Leonard Jerome, James R. Keene, and the track's president, William Kissam Vanderbilt, the Club held seasonal race cards at nearby Prospect Park fairgrounds until construction of the new race course was completed. On June 19, 1880 the track hosted its first day of Thoroughbred racing. Belmont Futurity Stakes
The Futurity Stakes, commonly referred to as the Belmont Futurity, is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually in mid-September or October at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, United States. Open to two-year-old horses, it is raced on turf over a distance of six furlongs. The creation of James G. K. Lawrence, president of the Sheepshead Bay Race Track, the Futurity was originally run with the two-year-old offspring of mares which had been nominated before their birth. This rule remained in effect until 1957, when the race was opened to all two-year-old horses. The Futurity was run as a turf race for the first time in 2018.
