Nassau Knolls Cemetery
Nassau Knolls Cemetery (also known as Knolls Cemetery and Nassau Knolls Memorial Park) is a cemetery and memorial park in Port Washington, in the Town of North Hempstead, in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York, United States. History The Nassau Knolls Cemetery was founded in April 1900 by the Lewis family – a prominent Port Washington family, with the current memorial park being formed in the 1930s. It is the burial place for many prominent locals. In 1940, the cemetery's bell tower opened. The tower's 18 bells were manufactured in nearby Roslyn. In 1946, the cemetery made newspaper headlines when it was searched by police, after reports were made that the suspect in the Logan Murder had fled onto the property. New York State Route 101 (NY 101) is a long state highway in northwestern Nassau County, New York, in the United States. It runs north–south as Port Washington Boulevard from NY 25A in Flower Hill, west of Roslyn and east of Manhasset, to Astor Lane in Sands Point. It becomes County Route 101 south along Searingtown Road to Shelter Rock Road ( County Route 8 or CR 8) and becomes Middle Neck Road (CR D55) north of Astor Lane, continuing north and west to a dead end at Long Island Sound as the unsigned County Route D55. Walter Uhl
Walter Uhl was a major 20th Century builder on Long Island, in New York, and was the founder of the Flower Hill Building Corporation. He is especially well known for his work in Flower Hill, New York. Early life Walter Uhl was born ca. 1903. Career Uhl started his building career in the 1930s. One of his earliest projects was the purchase of 27 lots in Manhasset Bay Estates in Port Washington, New York, which he would build homes upon. Around 1939, Uhl founded the Flower Hill Building Corporation, and he soon began one of his earliest and most prominent projects: the Flower Hill Estates subdivision of Flower Hill, New York. Monfort Cemetery
Monfort Cemetery is a historic cemetery located east of the intersection of Port Washington Boulevard ( NY 101) and Main Street in Port Washington, New York, United States. Description The cemetery contains 153 graves of early Dutch settlers of Cow Neck (as today's Port Washington was then known), revolutionary war patriots, and prominent leaders of North Hempstead, buried from 1737 to 1892. The cemetery is approximately 1/3 of an acre, surrounded by tall oak trees, and previously known as the Flower Hill Cemetery and Old Dutch Burying Grounds. It is fenced off and locked, not open to the public. The graves are arranged in 13 rows by family. Originally it was part of the 110 acre Rapelje farm. Flower Hill Cemetery (Flower Hill, New York)
The Flower Hill Cemetery, also known as the Burtis Cemetery and Old Cemetery at Flower Hill, is a historic cemetery and historic site located within the Incorporated Village of Flower Hill, in the Town of North Hempstead, in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York, United States. Description This cemetery, which dates back to the American Revolution-era, was active between 1798 and 1896. It is one of the oldest extant places within Flower Hill. Many prominent locals from this time period are buried at this cemetery, including members of the Burtis family, which owned a farm located partially over what is now the North Hempstead Country Club. Charles ("Charlie") Francis Vachris (February 19, 1939 – October 7, 2014) was an American civil engineer and politician, and was the founder and head of Vachris Engineering, PC. Life and career Early life and education Vachris was born in Brooklyn, New York, on February 19, 1939. The Nassau County Legislature is the lawmaking body of Nassau County, New York. Currently, it has 19 different members from 19 different districts.
