Nashville Mayoral Election, 2015
The 2015 Nashville mayoral election took place on August 6, 2015, to elect the next List of mayors of Nashville, Tennessee, mayor of Nashville, Tennessee. Incumbent Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Mayor Karl Dean was term limited and could not run for re-election to a third term in office. Since there was no candidate that received a majority of votes in the initial round of the election, a runoff election was held. In the runoff election, Democratic Party (United States), Democratic candidate Megan Barry was elected with 54.8% of the vote, defeating Republican Party (United States), Republican Candidate David Fox. Tennessee Democratic Party
The Tennessee Democratic Party (TNDP) is the affiliate of the Democratic Party in Tennessee. The party was founded in 1826 and is headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee. The Tennessee Democratic Party began alongside President Andrew Jackson's populist philosophy of Jacksonian democracy in the mid-1820s. From the late 19th-century until the 1960s, the party largely supported the use of the Jim Crow system. The party started shifting away from Democratic conservatism towards accepting more aspects of modern liberalism during President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal era. 2015 Memphis Mayoral Election
The 2015 Memphis mayoral election took place on October 8, 2015 to elect the Mayor of Memphis, Tennessee. The mayoral election coincided with elections for the thirteen seats on the Memphis City Council. The election was officially nonpartisan, with all candidates running together, regardless of party. Due to the 1991 ruling of U.S. District Judge Jerome Turner, there is no runoff allowed in citywide elections. Jeff Yarbro (born February 16, 1977) is an American attorney and politician from Tennessee. A member of the Democratic Party, he has represented District 21 in the Tennessee Senate since 2015, and has been the Minority Leader of the chamber since 2019. Early life and education Jeff Yarbro was born in Dyersburg, Tennessee, his father, Paul Yarbro, a farmer; and his mother, Joetta, a sexual abuse investigator for the state. As a child, he attended public schools. After graduating from high school in 1995, he attended Harvard University, where he earned a B.A. in government with honors. The United States Chamber of Commerce (USCC) is the largest lobbying group in the United States, representing over three million businesses and organizations. The group was founded in April 1912 out of local chambers of commerce at the urging of President William Howard Taft and his Secretary of Commerce and Labor Charles Nagel. Bill Purcell (mayor)
William Paxson Purcell III (born October 25, 1953) is an American politician who served as the fifth mayor of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, elected first in 1999 and reelected to a second term in 2003. He is a member of the Democratic Party. On June 24, 2008 he was named director of Harvard University's Institute of Politics (IOP) at the John F. Kennedy School of Government.
