Narsingdi-1 is a constituency represented in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) of Bangladesh since 2008 by Muhammad Nazrul Islam of the Awami League. Boundaries The constituency encompasses all but three union parishads of Narsingdi Sadar Upazila: Amdia, Meher Para, and Panchdona. History The constituency was created in 1984 from a Dhaka constituency when the former Dhaka District was split into six districts: Manikganj, Munshiganj, Dhaka, Gazipur, Narsingdi, and Narayanganj. Khairul Kabir Khokon is a Bangladesh Nationalist Party politician and a former member of parliament for Narsingdi-1, who currently serves as the party's assistant secretary. He had served as the president of Narsingdi District unit of Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Career Khokon was elected to Parliament in 2005 in a by-election from Narsingdi-1 as a candidate of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. The Jatiya Sangsad ( bn, জাতীয় সংসদ, lit=National Parliament, translit=Jatiyô Sôngsôd), often referred to simply as the ''Sangsad'' or JS and also known as the House of the Nation, is the supreme legislative body of Bangladesh. The current parliament of Bangladesh contains 350 seats, including 50 seats reserved exclusively for women. Elected occupants are called Member of Parliament, or MP. The 11th National Parliamentary Election was held on 30 December 2018. Elections to the body are held every five years, unless a parliament is dissolved earlier by the President of Bangladesh. 1986 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 7 May 1986. A total of 1,527 candidates contested the election. The result was a victory for the Jatiya Party, which won 153 of the 300 seats. Voter turnout was 61.1%. Bangladesh Nationalist Party, the winner of the previous elections, boycotted the election. British observers including a journalist termed the elections a "tragedy for democracy" and a "cynically frustrated exercise". General elections were held in Bangladesh on 1 October 2001. The 300 single-seat constituencies of the Jatiya Sangsad were contested by 1,935 candidates representing 54 parties and including 484 independents.
