Narail-1 is a constituency represented in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) of Bangladesh since 2008 by Kabirul Haque Mukti of the Awami League. Boundaries The constituency encompasses Kalia Upazila and five union parishads of Narail Sadar Upazila: Bhadrabila, Bichhali, Kalora, Shaikhati, and Singasolpur. History The constituency was created in 1984 from a Jessore constituency when the former Jessore District was split into four districts: Jhenaidah, Jessore, Magura, and Narail. Dhirendra Nath Saha
Dhirendra Nath Saha (died 2017) was a Bangladesh Nationalist Party politician and the former Member of Parliament from Narail-1. Career Saha was elected to parliament in 1991 and 1996 as a Bangladesh Awami League candidate from Narail-1. He was elected to Parliament from Narail-1 in 2002 in a by-election as a candidate of Bangladesh Nationalist Party. In 2008 he and his son, Shukoch Kumar Shaha, were imprisoned on an extortion case filed by Krishnapada Ghosh, Narail Upazila organising secretary of Bangladesh Awami League. Dhirendra Nath Saha (died 2017) was a Bangladesh Nationalist Party politician and the former Member of Parliament from Narail-1. Career Saha was elected to parliament in 1991 and 1996 as a Bangladesh Awami League candidate from Narail-1. SM Abu Sayeed (1 January 1937 – 28 August 2017) is a Jatiya Party (Ershad) politician and the former member of parliament for Narail-1. He was the organizer of the Liberation War of Bangladesh. Early life SM Abu Sayeed was born on 1 January 1937 in Narail District. Career Sayeed was the principal of Khulna Daulatpur Diba Nishi College and Shaheed Abdus Salam Degree College. Narail District
Narail ( bn, নড়াইল, pron: ''nɔɽail'') is a district in south-western Bangladesh. It is a part of Khulna Division. History Narail town was named after a feudal lord (a zamindar). The zamindars established a market at Roopgonj, also named after a zamindar. They established a post office for the first time in the district during British Raj near Rotongonj, named after another member of the zamindar's family. They modernised Narail, and promoted culture, sports and education. The large playing field, Kuriddobe, was a gift of the zamindar's family. They introduced football competition, with a shield given to the champions, a cup to the runners-up, and medals to all players from the early twentieth century. 2008 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 29 December 2008. The two main parties in the election were the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Khaleda Zia, and the Bangladesh Awami League Party, led by Sheikh Hasina. The Bangladesh Awami League Party formed a fourteen-party Grand Alliance including Ershad's Jatiya Party, while the BNP formed a four-party alliance which included the Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami. The election was originally scheduled for January 2007, but it was postponed by a military-controlled caretaker government for an extended period of time. The elections resulted in a landslide victory for the Awami League-led grand alliance, which won 263 seats out 300. 2014 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 5 January 2014, in accordance with the constitutional requirement that elections must take place within the 90-day period before the expiration of the term of the Jatiya Sangshad on 24 January 2014. The elections were not free and fair. They were preceded by a government crackdown on the opposition, with Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Opposition leader Khaleda Zia was put under house arrest. There were widespread arrests of other opposition members, violence and strikes by the opposition, attacks on religious minorities, and extrajudicial killings by the government, with around 21 people killed on election day.
