Nara Visa is an unincorporated village and locus of a same-named census-designated place in Quay County, New Mexico, United States. It has the post office serving the ZIP code of 88430; while the village is not specifically tracked by the Census Department, the population of the entire ZCTA for 88430 was 212 at the 2000 census. Demographics History Nara Visa traces its beginnings to brothers Sim and Fred McFarland of La Veta, Colorado. The brothers originally came to New Mexico to work on their uncle's cattle ranch. When word came that the Rock Island Railroad would be building a track through the area, the McFarlands moved to a location near the proposed route. The community was first known as Narvaez, named after the Narvaez family, who lived in the area in the 1880s. English-speaking settlers changed the name into its current name Nara Visa. Henry F. Nara Visa School
The Nara Visa School is a historic school building in Nara Visa, New Mexico. The school was built in 1921 during the settlement of eastern New Mexico. Architect Joseph Champ Berry, noted for his work in the Texas Panhandle, designed the Mission Revival building. While the building's plain facade and red tile roof are typical of the Mission Revival style, the wood corbel brackets along the roof reflect local vernacular designs and American Craftsman influences. A gymnasium built by the Works Progress Administration and several contributing outbuildings are also on the property. The school closed in 1968 and the building is now a community center. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. A boxcar is the North American ( AAR) term for a railroad car that is enclosed and generally used to carry freight. The boxcar, while not the simplest freight car design, is considered one of the most versatile since it can carry most loads. Boxcars have side sliding doors of varying size and operation, and some include end doors and adjustable bulkheads to load very large items. Similar covered freight cars outside North America are covered goods wagons and, depending on the region, are called ''goods van'' ( UK and Australia), ''covered wagon'' ( UIC and UK) or simply ''van'' (UIC, UK and Australia). La Veta, Colorado
La Veta ( , Spanish for "the vein") is a statutory town in Huerfano County, Colorado, United States. The town population was 800 as of the 2010 United States Census. History Col. John M. Francisco, the sutler at Fort Garland, and his business partner, Henry Daigre, purchased 48,000 acres of land in Cuchara Valley in 1862. The land was part of the Vigil land grant. They established a settlement for farmers and ranchers, with Francisco Fort as the commercial center. The 100-foot-square building was constructed with 2-foot thick adobe walls, interior rooms, that opened up to a central plaza. It was built with a flat roof with gun ports along the parapets. In 1863, the fort was attacked by a band of Ute Indians. Men got on the roof to defend the fort, and a volunteer rode to Fort Lyon. The Utes departed before the troops arrived. ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) are statistical entities developed by the United States Census Bureau for tabulating summary statistics. These were introduced with the Census 2000 and continued with the 2010 Census and 5 year American Community Survey data sets. This new entity was developed to overcome the difficulties in precisely defining the land area covered by each ZIP code. Defining the extent of an area is necessary in order to tabulate census data for that area.
