Nantyglo
Nantyglo () is a village in the ancient parish of Aberystruth and county of Monmouth situated deep within the South Wales Valleys between Blaina and Brynmawr in the county borough of Blaenau Gwent. Governance An electoral ward in the same name exists. The population of this ward at the 2011 census was 4,635. Places of interest Parc Nant y Waun is a nature reserve incorporating 22 hectares of grassland, mires and reservoirs which was officially opened in 2007. Tom Clapp
Tom Clapp (25 October 1858 – 15 October 1933) was an English-born international rugby union forward who played club rugby for Newport and Nantyglo RFC. He won 14 caps for Wales and captained the team on three occasions. Clapp was the first Newport player to captain Wales. Rugby career Born in Portman Square, Marylebone, London in 1858, but raised in Somerset,Parry-Jones (1999), pg 36. Clapp's family moved to Nantyglo when he was still in his youth. Clapp would play his early rugby for Blaina before moving to Nantyglo RFC. In 1883 he moved to first class team Newport and Clapp made an impression on the club as in the 1884/85 and the 1885/86 seasons he was made team captain. In May 1888 Clapp left Welsh rugby behind and emigrated to the United States of America following his brother David who left a year earlier. Trish Law
Patricia Law, née Bolter (born 17 March 1954) is a Welsh politician who was the Blaenau Gwent People's Voice AM for Blaenau Gwent in Wales between 2006 and 2011. Background Patricia Bolter was born in Nantyglo, Blaenau Gwent, in 1954. She was educated in Nantyglo Junior School, Glanyravon Secondary Modern School and Ebbw Vale College. She trained as a Nursing Assistant in an EMI unit for Gwent Healthcare NHS Trust, before marrying Peter Law. The couple were married for 30 years and had five children and one grandchild. During Peter Law's term as AM and MP, Trish Law worked in his constituency office. David Brookman, Baron Brookman
David Keith Brookman, Baron Brookman (born 3 January 1937) is a British steel worker and trade unionist. The son of George Henry Brookman and Blodwin Nash, he was educated at Nantyglo Grammar School in Monmouthshire. Brookman worked as steel worker for Richard Thomas and Baldwins in Ebbw Vale from 1953 until 1955, when he began his service in the Royal Air Force. In 1957, he returned to his job and performed it to 1973. For the Iron and Steel Trades Confederation, he was divisional organiser from 1973 to 1985, assistant general secretary from 1985 to 1993 and eventually general secretary from 1993 to 1999. Since 1993, he is a board member of British Steel plc and UK Steel Enterprise. From 1976 to 1982, Brookman was member of the TUC Educational Advisory Committee for Wales and from 1992 to 1999, of the Trades Union Congress. Company Sergeant Major John Henry Williams, (29 September 1886 – 7 March 1953) was a Welsh colliery worker, soldier, and a recipient of the Victoria Cross (VC) the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Williams is the most decorated Welsh non-commissioned officer of all time. Early life Williams was born in Nantyglo, Monmouthshire, on 29 September 1886. Nicholas Desmond John Smith (born 14 January 1960) is a Welsh Labour Party politician serving as Member of Parliament (MP) for Blaenau Gwent since 2010. From 1998 to 2006 he was a councillor in the London Borough of Camden. David Nash (rugby Coach)
David Nash (15 July 1939 – 30 October 2016) was a Wales international rugby union player. A number 8 forward, he attained 6 caps for Wales between 1960 and 1961. Nash was selected for the 1962 British Lions tour of South Africa. He played his club rugby for Ebbw Vale. In 1967 Nash was appointed as the first national coach of the Wales national rugby union team. He was appointed to coach Wales for the season, but having won one and drawn one out of the five international matches played, he resigned when the Welsh Rugby Union refused to allow him to accompany Wales on their 1968 tour of Argentina. Keith Jones (Welsh Footballer)
Keith Jones (23 October 1928 – 25 August 2007) was a Welsh international footballer. A goalkeeper, he made 295 league appearances in a 13-year career in the Football League, and won one cap for Wales in 1949. He spent May 1946 to July 1957 at Aston Villa, and made 199 appearances in all competitions, though was usually the club's second choice goalkeeper. He was sold on to Port Vale for £3,500, and helped the "Valiants" to win the Fourth Division title in 1958–59. He moved on to Crewe Alexandra in April 1959, before leaving the club the following year. Club career Jones played for Stourport Swifts, West Bromwich Albion, and Kidderminster Harriers, before signing with Aston Villa in May 1946. Crawshay Bailey (1789 – 9 January 1872) was an English industrialist who became one of the great iron-masters of Wales. Early life Bailey was born in 1789 in Great Wenham, Suffolk, the son of John Bailey, of Wakefield and his wife Susannah. His parents had moved from Normanton, near Wakefield in around 1780 by which time they had already had at least three children (Ann, Elizabeth and William). Crawshay was the youngest of six children to be born in Great Wenham (the others being Susan, Joseph, John, and Thomas). Brynmawr
Brynmawr (; , ,) is a market town, community and electoral ward in Blaenau Gwent, Wales. The town, sometimes cited as the highest town in Wales, is situated at above sea level at the head of the South Wales Valleys. It grew with the development of the coal mining and iron industries in the early 19th century. Until the reorganisation of local authorities in 1974, Brynmawr was administered as part of the county of Brecknockshire.
