Nanjemoy Creek
Nanjemoy Creek is a , Creek (tidal), tidal tributary of the Potomac River in Charles County, Maryland, Charles County, Maryland, United States, located between Cedar Point Neck and Tayloe Neck. Its watershed area (excluding water) is , with 2% impervious surface in 1994. The Nature Conservancy established its Nanjemoy Creek Preserve in 1978, which protects more than in the Drainage basin, watershed. There is a large great blue heron rookery located at Nanjemoy Creek. Blossom Point, a part of Harry Diamond Laboratories, and operated by the U.S. Army, is located on Cedar Point Neck, and unexploded ordnance (UXO) may be present within firing fans, which extend into both Nanjemoy Creek and the Potomac River. Nanjemoy, Maryland
Nanjemoy is a settlement along Maryland Route 6 in southwestern Charles County, Maryland, United States, and the surrounding large rural area more or less bounded by Nanjemoy Creek to the east and north, and the Potomac River to the south and west. Geography Nanjemoy is within the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, approximately 25 miles (40 km) south of the Capital Beltway (Interstates 95 and 495). The area is served by Maryland Route 6 and other two-lane state highways; the nearest major roads are Maryland Route 210 to the north and U.S. Route 301 to the east. The Nanjemoy area is becoming increasingly popular with Washington-area commuters, particularly those working in nearby Indian Head or Fort Washington in Maryland or in Alexandria, Virginia. Harry Diamond Laboratories
The Harry Diamond Laboratories (HDL) was a research facility of the Ordnance Development Division of the National Bureau of Standards and later the US Army, most notable for its work on proximity fuzes in World War II. The organization was founded in 1940, but was not named after its first director Harry Diamond until 1962. Great Blue Heron
The great blue heron (''Ardea herodias'') is a large wading bird in the heron family Ardeidae, common near the shores of open water and in wetlands over most of North America and Central America, as well as the Caribbean and the Galápagos Islands. It is a rare vagrant to coastal Spain, the Azores, and areas of far southern Europe. An all-white population found in south Florida and the Florida Keys is known as the great white heron.
