Nancy Flanagan
Anne (Nancy) Flanagan MBE (born 1929) is a British local community worker and rights activist, living in the Vauxhall area of Liverpool. Work and Activism Flanagan worked to improve the health, social and living conditions within the Vauxhall area for over 40 years, starting when she became chairperson of the Vauxhall Project in 1969. Flanagan held the position for three years. In 1984 she became chairperson of the Vauxhall Neighbourhood Council and as of 2015 was still active, as well as being chairperson of the Heriot Street Residents Association. Throughout her 50 years of public service, Flanagan did not take a salary and contributed her time voluntarily. Flanagan was involved in the campaign to build the Vauxhall Health Centre in Limekiln Lane and other projects, like the Vauxhall Health Forum. Member Of The Most Excellent Order Of The British Empire
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the order. Sure Start
Sure Start is a UK Government area-based initiative, announced in 1998 by the then Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, applying primarily in England with slightly different versions in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The initiative originated from HM Treasury, with the aim of "giving children the best possible start in life" through improvement of childcare, early education, health and family support, with an emphasis on outreach and community development. Launched in 1998 by Tessa Jowell, Sure Start had similarities to the much older, and similarly named, Head Start programme in the United States and is also comparable to Australia Head Start and Ontario's Early Years Plan. They can be journalists, environmentalists, whistleblowers, trade unionists, lawyers, teachers, housing campaigners, participants in direct action, or just individuals acting alone. Vauxhall Project
Vauxhall ( ) is a district in South West London, part of the London Borough of Lambeth, England. Vauxhall was part of Surrey until 1889 when the County of London was created. Named after a medieval manor, "Fox Hall", it became well known for the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens. From the Victorian period until the mid-20th century, Vauxhall was a mixed industrial and residential area, of predominantly manual workers' homes, many demolished and replaced by Lambeth Council with social housing after the Second World War, and business premises, including large railway, gas, and water works.
