Nancy Burley
Nancy Burley (8 March 1930 – 7 January 2013) was an Australian figure skater. She represented Australia at the 1952 Winter Olympics, where she placed 14th. She and Gweneth Molony were the first ladies singles skaters to represent Australia at the Olympics. Figure skating is a sport in which individuals, pairs, or groups perform on figure skates on ice. It was the first winter sport to be included in the Olympic Games, when contested at the 1908 Olympics in London. The Olympic disciplines are men's singles, women's singles, pair skating, and ice dance; the four individual disciplines are also combined into a team event, first included in the Winter Olympics in 2014. Australia sent a delegation to compete at the 1952 Winter Olympics from the 14 to 25 February 1952 in Oslo, Norway. This was the nation's second appearance at the Winter Olympic Games with their last appearance being in 1936. Australia delegation consisted of nine competitors in four sports. This included the nation's debut in alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, and figure skating to go along with their appearance in the speed skating. Australia best result from the 1952 Games was a tenth-place finish in the men's singles figure skating. Gweneth Molony
Gweneth (or Gwenneth) Molony (born 17 June 1932) is an Australian figure skater. She is the 1949–1951 Australian national champion. She represented Australia at the 1952 Winter Olympics, where she placed 21st. She and Nancy Burley were the first ladies singles skaters to represent Australia at the Olympics. Molony also competed in pair skating; she is the 1949 Australian national champion with partner Adrian Swan. In 2020 at the IOC (International Olympic Committee) headquarters in Lausanne, she was recognised as Australia's first female Winter Olympian. She was presented with her Olympian certificate, and became the earliest Olympian to sign the athletes wall at the new IOC headquarters. Family Molony came from a skating family. Her father, E.J. Felix Kaspar
Felix Kaspar (January 14, 1915 in Vienna, Austria – December 5, 2003 in Bradenton, Florida, U.S.) was an Austrian figure skater, twice World champion, and 1936 bronze medalist. Kaspar began figure skating at age of 9. He trained on the artificial ice rink of Eduard Engelmann Jr. Kaspar was famous for his high jumps. At the beginning of World War II Kaspar was in Australia, where he met his wife, June. The couple was married for 54 years. They had one daughter named Cherie. Kaspar spent the whole time of the World War II in Australia. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Kaspar taught in Hershey, Pennsylvania. In 1965 he moved with his family to Minneapolis, Minnesota and worked there as a coach at the figure skating center in Golden Valley in the Twin Cities. Amongst others, he coached the Japanese Emi Watanabe while there. In 1977 he moved with his family to Pasadena, California and worked there also as a figure skating coach. Sharon Kay Burley Sullivan (born 8 May 1956 in Tripoli, Libya) is an Australian figure skater who competed in ladies singles. She finished first at the Australian Figure Skating Championships four times and competed at the 1976 Winter Olympic Games, coming in twentieth. She now coaches at the Gold Coast ice rink: Iceland, Bundall as the only figure skating Olympian from Queensland.
