Nanaimo—Alberni was a federal electoral district (Canada), electoral district in British Columbia, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1979 to 1988. It was subsequently recreated and was represented in the House of Commons from 1997 to 2015. Demographics Nanaimo—Alberni has the highest median age of all federal electoral districts in Canada (50.1 years of age). Geography From 1979 to 1988, it consisted of: * the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District, * the Nanaimo Regional District, * (Lasqueti Island and the adjacent smaller islands in the Powell River Regional District, * the northwest part of Electoral Area H of the Cowichan Valley Regional District. Comox—Alberni was a federal electoral district in British Columbia, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1917 to 1979, and again from 1988 to 1993. History This riding was created in 1914 from parts of Comox—Atlin riding. It was abolished in 1976 when it was redistributed into Comox—Powell River and Nanaimo—Alberni ridings. It was recreated in 1987 from parts of those two ridings. Demographics Geography It included, together with more rural areas, the southern portion of the City of Nanaimo, the City of Duncan, the Town of Ladysmith, and the District of North Cowichan. History The electoral district was created in 1987 from parts of Nanaimo–Alberni and Cowichan—Malahat—The Islands ridings. James Lunney
James D. Lunney (born September 5, 1951) is a Canadian politician. He was the Member of Parliament for Nanaimo—Alberni from 2000 to 2015. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Manitoba in 1972 and a Doctor of Chiropractic from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto in 1976. He was first elected in 2000 as a Canadian Alliance candidate. He was re-elected in 2004, 2006 and 2008 under the banner of the Conservative Party. He resigned from the Conservative caucus on March 31, 2015, claiming on his blog, "the realm of politics at senior levels" have become hostile to "a Christian world-view", and completed his term in parliament as an Independent MP. Nanaimo—Cowichan—The Islands was a federal electoral district—also known as a “riding”—in British Columbia, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1962 to 1979. This riding was created in 1962 from Nanaimo. The 1966 electoral redistribution saw this riding gain territory from Metchosin and lose territory in the northern end toward the Englishman River. The federal electoral redistribution of 2012 was a redistribution of electoral districts ("ridings") in Canada following the results of the 2011 Canadian census. As a result of amendments to the Constitution Act, 1867, the number of seats in the House of Commons of Canada increased from 308 to 338. The previous electoral redistribution was in 2003. Background and previous attempts at reform Prior to 2012, the redistribution rules for increasing the number of seats in the House of Commons of Canada was governed by section 51 of the ''Constitution Act, 1867'', as last amended in 1985.
