''Nana'' is a 1944 Mexican film by Celestino Gorostiza and Roberto Gavaldón. The film is an adaptation of Émile Zola's 1880 novel ''Nana'', and is the last film of the Mexican star Lupe Vélez. Plot Based in the Émile Zola novel of the same name, which details the life of Nana, a French prostitute of the 19th century. Roberto Gavaldón (June 7, 1909 in Jiménez, Chihuahua – September 4, 1986 in Mexico City) was a Mexican film director. Eight of Gavaldón's films were featured on the list 100 Best Movies of the Cinema of Mexico. His 1958 film ''Ash Wednesday'' was entered into the 8th Berlin International Film Festival and his 1959 film ''Beyond All Limits'' was entered into the following years festival. Irma Serrano
Irma Consuelo Cielo Serrano Castro (; born 9 December 1933) is a Mexican singer, actress and politician. Famous for her "tantalizing", "untamed spitfire" voice, she is one of the most noted performers of the ranchera and corrido genres; she was nicknamed ''La Tigresa de la Canción Ranchera'' and later known simply as "''La Tigresa''" (). At the same time, she developed a film career of more than a dozen films. Celestino Gorostiza Alcalá (born January 31, 1904 in Villahermosa – January 11, 1967 in Mexico City) was a Mexican theater and cine playwright, director and dramatist. Biography Gorostiza, son of Celestino Gorostiza and Elvira Alcalá de Gorostiza, was the older brother of José Gorostiza. He was co-founder of the '' Ulises'' theater (1927-1928) and of the ''Orientación'' theater (1932), both in Mexico City Gorostiza was married to Araceli Otero Mena, older sister of Clementina Otero. Araceli gave birth to their daughter Paloma Gorostiza Otero. ''Nana'' is a novel by the French naturalist author Émile Zola. Completed in 1880, ''Nana'' is the ninth installment in the 20-volume ''Les Rougon-Macquart'' series. Origins A year before he started to write ''Nana'', Zola knew nothing about the Théâtre des Variétés. Ludovic Halévy invited him to attend an operetta with him there on February 15, 1878, and took him backstage. Halévy told him innumerable stories about the amorous life of the star, Anna Judic, whose ménage à trois served as the model for the relationships of Rose Mignon, her husband, and Steiner in Zola's novel. Halévy also provided Zola with stories about famous prostitutes such as Blanche d'Antigny, Anna Deslions, Delphine de Lizy, and Hortense Schneider, upon which Zola drew in developing the character of his title character.
