Nalhati–Azimganj branch line is a railway line connecting Nalhati Junction and Azimganj Junction. History In 1863, the Indian Branch Railway Company, a private company opened the Nalhati–Azimganj branch line. The 27 kilometres (17 mi) track was initially a 4' gauge line. The track was subsequently converted to 5' 6" broad gauge. The Indian Branch Railway Company was purchased by the Government of India in 1872 and the line was renamed Nalhati State Railway. It became a part of the East Indian Railway Company in 1892. History The Nalhati Junction station building was built in 1892 as a part of private railway line (Nalhati–Azimganj). The structure of the station was made of bricks and mortar and its roof was made of wooden beams, purlins and tiles, which have been damaged. Platforms Nalhati Junction station has 5 platforms having capacity of 14 coach+1 engine among them two 1A and 1B platform for branch line. It is a standard on ground structure with roof. Platform number 3 and 2 for up & down main line respectively and 1 for down loop line. Azimganj Junction is a railway station on the Barharwa–Azimganj–Katwa loop and is located in Murshidabad district lying west of Bhagirathi, a part of the Hooghly river in the Indian state of West Bengal. Nalhati is a town and a municipality in Rampurhat subdivision of Birbhum District in the Indian state of West Bengal near the West Bengal / Jharkhand border. This town is named after the ''Shakti peeth'' Nalhateshwari temple, which according to the mythologies is situated where the "nala" i.e. throat of goddess Shakti had fallen. It is one of the 51 ''Shakti Peethas'' in India. Nalhati Municipality was established in 2000. Geography Location Nalhati is located at . It has an average elevation of 48 metres (160 feet).
