Nalda
Nalda is a municipality of the autonomous community of La Rioja (Spain). It is located near the capital, Logroño. Its population in January 2006 was 1,074 inhabitants over a 24.6 square kilometre area. History The town was the scene of the preliminaries of the famous Battle of Clavijo between Arabs and Christians in year 844. It appears mentioned for the first time in the 11th century, in the relation of properties that the king Don García of Nájera granted to his wife Estefanía. From the 14th century to the 19th century, Nalda became the head of the ''Señorío de Cameros''. Castle Of Nalda
The Castle of Nalda is a medieval building located in Nalda, La Rioja (Spain). History The first accounts of the castle of Nalda date from 1299. However its origin may be prior to that date, given its strategic location the defensive system of the Iregua valley, against the muslim ruling. In the 14th century its destiny was linked to the family Ramírez de Arellano becoming the center of power of a vast territory, the Lordship of Cameros, in an area that stretched from the north of the modern province of Soria to the Ebro valley. When the military and strategic needs changed, it was used as administrative building. It disappeared with the abolition of the dominions at the beginning of the 19th century; it was used as a quarry, its materials were plundered and rubble ended up covering the old fortress. Peña Bajenza
Peña Bajenza (also known as "Gate of La Rioja", "Mountains of Islallana" or "Rocks of Viguera") is a large rock formation situated just above the village of Islallana, part of the municipality of Nalda, in the Spanish province of La Rioja. The 400-metre-high red-coloured rocks sculpted by erosion are part of the ''Peñas de Viguera'' and one of the most well-known landmarks of the region. The formation has several hiking and climbing trails and is home to colonies of griffon vultures and other wild birds such the Egyptian vulture in summer. Two big crosses stand at the mountain. The first one can be found just in the beginning of the route (475 meters above the sea level). The second one (which is the most famous one) stands at the summit of the highest rock (941 metres above sea level).
