Nadezhda Kibardina
Nadezhda Nikolaevna Kibardina (russian: Надежда Николаевна Кибардина; born 8 February 1956) is a retired USSR female road and track cyclist and four-time world champion. In 1980 and in 1981 she became world champion on the track in the individual pursuit and she became world champion in 1987 and 1989 on the road in the team time trial. Road bicycle racing is the cycle sport discipline of road cycling, held primarily on Road surface, paved roads. The Universiade is an international multi-sport event, organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The name is a portmanteau of the words "University" and "Olympiad". The Universiade is referred to in English as the World University Games or World Student Games; however, this latter term can also refer to competitions for sub-University grades students. Cycling At The 1983 Summer Universiade
The Cycling Tournament at the 1983 Summer Universiade took place in Edmonton, Alberta (Canada) in July 1983. Cycling was included in the Summer Universiade programme as an optional sport. There were 12 cycling events; 8 for track cycling and 4 for road cycling. The venue for track cycling was the Argyll Velodrome. The finish of the road races were in Hawerlark Park. Events Track time trials In the afternoon competition on 4 July under the sun at the Argyll Velodrome, two cyclists from the Soviet Union won men's and women's 1 km time trial. Aleksandr Panfilov took the men's event in 1:06.874 seconds, 1.015 sec ahead of the silver medalist Stefano Baudino from Italy and 1.1667 sec faster than Andris Zelch-Lotchmelis of the Soviet Union. 1983 Summer Universiade
The 1983 Summer Universiade, also known as the 1983 World University Games or XII Summer Universiade, took place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada between July 1 and 12, 1983. Over 2400 athletes from 73 countries participated. It was the first time Canada hosted these Games. Edmonton also hosted the 1978 Commonwealth Games. The event was marred by tragedy from the death of Soviet diver Sergei Chalibashvili when he died eight days after hitting his head on the 10 m diving platform in competition while attempting a reverse 3½ in the tuck position. Charles, Prince of Wales opened the Universiade accompanied by Princess Diana, and other dignitaries and celebrities also visited.
