Nabasa United was a semi-professional football club founded sometime in 2008 and based in Madang, Papua New Guinea. The club entered the 2008–09 Papua New Guinea National Soccer League as the only Madang-based franchise, and finished in 8th place out of eight clubs, after winning just one game. History This first reports of a Madang-based football club called Nabasa United came in September 2008, when a report from the OFC revealed a side with that name would be entering the 2008–09 Papua New Guinea National Soccer League, but were yet to fully pay the affiliation fee. In September, it was revealed that the major sponsor of the NSL, Telikom PNG, had demanded the inclusion of a Madang-based franchise for marketing and promotional purposes, since both Madang Fox and Besta Madang had pulled out after the previous season. 2008–09 Papua New Guinea National Soccer League
The 2008–09 Papua New Guinea National Soccer League season, known as the Telikom NSL Cup for sponsorship reasons, was the third edition of Papua New Guinea National Soccer League. The title was won by Hekari Souths United, who won their third consecutive title. The side were awarded the title after several postponements and the eventual cancellation of the Grand Final, by virtue of their superior regular season finish compared to Rapatona Tigers, who they were due to face in the final. Teams Eight teams entered the competition, an expansion of one from the previous season's seven. Previous season's runners-up Gelle Hills, and bottom two clubs Madang Fox and Besta Madang Fighters, all withdrew. Of the four new teams, only University Inter had any sort of previous history, having been founded in 1969 and having won five national titles before the induction of the National Soccer League. The KPHL National Soccer League, also known as the Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited National Soccer League for sponsorship reasons, is the men's top division of professional soccer in Papua New Guinea. It is a nationwide league formed in 2006 by Papua New Guinea Football Association. It replaced the Papua New Guinea National Club Championship as the country's major soccer competition. In its 13 seasons, the competition has been won by only two clubs: Hekari United won the first eight editions, while Lae City have won the last six. Madang (old German name: ''Friedrich-Wilhelmshafen'') is the capital of Madang Province and is a town with a population of 27,420 (in 2005) on the north coast of Papua New Guinea. It was first settled by the Germans in the 19th century. History Russian biologist Nicholai Miklukho-Maklai was probably the first European to visit the area. In 1871 he stayed at Astrolabe Bay south of present-day Madang for 15 months. He had a good relationship with the local communities before leaving, suffering from malaria. In April 1884 an expedition by the German New Guinea Company led by Otto Finsch and Eduard Dallmann arrived and named the landing point "Friedrich Wilhelmshafen"; however, they felt that the area was unsuitable for a settlement. Besta Madang Fighters was a short-lived Papua New Guinea semi-professional football club founded in 2007, based in Madang. The club was founded as a new franchise ahead of the 2007–08 Papua New Guinea National Soccer League season, consisting predominantly from the local-level areas of the Madang province. The club finished 6th out of 7 sides that season, and failed to return the following season.
