NWA North American Heavyweight Championship
The NWA North American Heavyweight Championship was a professional wrestling championship created by the National Wrestling Alliance in 1994 after World Championship Wrestling withdrew from the NWA. There were various regional versions of the North American title before the creation of this all-NWA recognised North American championship. From 1998 to 2000, the title was the major championship in Music City Wrestling. Title history Since 1994, there have been forty six total championship reigns. Greg Valentine was the inaugural champion. The record for most reigns is held by Mike Rapada, who won the title five times. The National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) is an American professional wrestling promotion and former professional wrestling governing body operated by its parent company Lightning One, Inc. Founded in 1948, the NWA began as a governing body for a group of regional professional wrestling promotions, the heads of which made up the Board of Directors. The group operated a territory system which sanctioned their own company championships while recognizing a singular world champion who defended his title across all the territories, participated in talent exchanges, and collectively protected the territorial integrity of member promotions. Prior to the 1960s it acted as the sole governing body for most of professional wrestling. Barry Buchanan (born January 15, 1968) is an American professional wrestler. He is best known for his appearances with the World Wrestling Federation / World Wrestling Entertainment (WWF/WWE) under the ring names Recon, Bull Buchanan and B² and for his appearances with All Japan Pro Wrestling (AJPW) and Pro Wrestling Noah (NOAH) as Buchanan. The National Wrestling Alliance was a professional wrestling stable who competed in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1998 and was led by Jim Cornette. Most members of the stable were alumni of Jim Crockett Promotions, once a prominent member of the NWA before selling most assets to Turner Broadcasting, which became the basis of World Championship Wrestling (WCW). James Mark "Jim" Cornette (born September 17, 1961) is an American author and podcaster who has previously worked in the professional wrestling industry as an agent, booker, color commentator, manager, promoter, trainer, and occasional professional wrestler.
