NHK Mile Cup
The NHK Mile Cup () is a Grade 1 flat horse race in Japan for three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies, run over a distance of 1,600 metres (approximately one mile) on the turf at Tokyo Racecourse in May. The NHK Mile Cup is sponsored by the Japanese public broadcasting organization NHK, and as such, this race is broadcast not only on Fuji TV (one of NHK's competitors) but on one of the NHK channels that cover horse racing (NHK General TV; the other, BS-1, covers certain other races such as the Japan Cup). (In Japanese horseracing, "Sponsor" doesn't mean the man or organisation provide prize money. Kurofune (horse)
Kurofune (Japanese クロフネ, 31 March 1998 - 17 January 2021) was an American-bred, Japanese-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire who won Grade 1 races on both turf and dirt. He showed promising form as a juvenile in 2000 when he won two of four races and ran third in a very strong edition of the Radio Tampa Hai Sansai Stakes. In the following year he took the Mainichi Hai and the NHK Mile Cup in spring on turf before being switched to dirt racing in late autumn and winning the Musashino Stakes and the Japan Cup Dirt. He won six of his ten races, four of them in track record times, before his track career was ended by injury. After his retirement from racing he became a very successful breeding stallion. Tokyo Racecourse
is located in Fuchu, Tokyo, Japan. Built in 1933 for horse racing, it is considered the "racecourse of racecourses" in Japanese horseracing. It has a capacity of 223,000, with seating for 13,750. Tokyo Racecourse hosts numerous G1 (Grade 1) races, including the Japan Cup, Tokyo Yushun (the Japanese Derby) and the Yasuda Kinen, a part of the Asian Mile Challenge. Physical attributes Tokyo Race Course's grass course measures 2083m (1¼ miles + 234 feet) with two chutes (1800m and 2000m). The Mainichi Hai (Japanese 毎日杯) is a Grade 3 horse race for three-year-old Thoroughbreds run in March over a distance of 1800 metres at Hanshin Racecourse. The race was first run in 1954 and has held Grade 3 status since 1984. It was initially run over 2000 metres before being cut to its current distance in 2007. Yukio Okabe
Yukio Okabe (Japanese: 岡部 幸雄, ''Okabe Yukio'', born October 31, 1948) is a Japanese former jockey. He belonged to the Japan Racing Association (JRA) from 1967 to 2005. From January 1995 to July 2007, he held the record for the most wins as a jockey in the Japan Racing Association, with a total of 2,943 wins in 2007. Early life Okabe was born on October 31, 1948, in Gunma Prefecture, Japan. He was born to a family of farmers who also raised horses. Kazuo Fujisawa
(born September 22, 1951, in Tomakomai, Hokkaido, Japan) is a retired trainer of Thoroughbred race horses. He had been a licensed trainer in Japan since 1987 and since 1993 has won the training title eleven times. He has trained three horses that were voted Japanese Horse of the Year on four occasions: Taiki Shuttle (1998), Symboli Kris S (2002, 2003) and Zenno Rob Roy (2004). Currently Fujisawa is the trainer of Casino Drive who won the 2008 Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont Park in New York. Fujisawa retired from horse training on February 28, 2022 as he had reached the age of retirement, with his stable winning the 1,570th race on the day of his retirement. El Condor Pasa (horse)
El Condor Pasa ( ja, エルコンドルパサー, link=no, March 17, 1995 – July 16, 2002) was an American-bred, Japanese-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. In 1998 he won the NHK Mile Cup and the Japan Cup. In the following year he was campaigned in Europe where he won the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and the Prix Foy before finishing second in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. He was retired to stud but died after three seasons following unsuccessful colic surgery. El Condor Pasa has been described as the best Japanese racehorse of the 20th century. (born March 15, 1969 in Kyoto, Kyoto) is a Japanese jockey. A legend in Japan, Yutaka Take made his riding debut in 1987 and currently holds seven all-time records in his native country. Take has won at least one Grade 1 races for 23 straight years until 2010 and a graded stakes race for 36 consecutive years. Take has also shown his abilities abroad. Yoshitomi Shibata
(born July 30, 1966, in Tōhoku, Aomori) is a Japanese Horse racing jockey. He was a three-time champion jockey of Kantō, riding 2000 victories in his career. He comes from a racing family; most notably his uncle , who was a prolific jockey who won over 4,000 races during his career. He rode his first winner in 1985, on ''Izumi-Sanei'' at Nakayama. He was Japanese champion apprentice in 1985. He won his first grade race in 1988, riding ''Soushin-Houju'' in the Nakayama Himba Stakes. Oka Sho
The is a Japanese Grade 1 flat horse race in Japan. The race is restricted to three-year-old Thoroughbred fillies and is run over a distance of 1,600 metres (approximately 1 mile) at the Hanshin Racecourse, Takarazuka, Hyōgo in April. It was first run in 1939 and is the Japanese equivalent of the English 1,000 Guineas. The race was run at Nakayama Racecourse until 1944 when it was run at Tokyo Racecourse. After a two year hiatus the Oka Sho was staged at Kyoto Racecourse from 1947 to 1949. The race was also run at Kyoto in 1967, 1991 and 1995.
