National Film Registry
The National Film Registry (NFR) is the United States National Film Preservation Board's (NFPB) collection of films selected for preservation, each selected for its historical, cultural and aesthetic contributions since the NFPB’s inception in 1988. History Through the 1980s, several prominent filmmakers and industry personalities in the United States, such as Frank Capra and Martin Scorsese, advocated for Congress to enact a film preservation bill in order to avoid commercial modifications (such as pan and scan and editing for TV) of classic films, which they saw as negative. In response to the controversy over the colorization of originally black and white films in the decade specifically, Representatives Robert J. Mrazek and Sidney R. Yates introduced the National Film Preservation Act of 1988, which established the National Film Registry, its purpose, and the criteria for selecting films for preservation. The Act was passed and the NFR's mission was subsequently reau ...

National Finals Rodeo
The National Finals Rodeo (NFR) is the premier rodeo event by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). The NFR showcases the talents of the PRCA's top 15 money-winners in the season for each event. The NFR is held each year in the first full week of December, at the Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in Paradise, Nevada, United States. (UNLV) and is aired live on The Cowboy Channel. ''Cowboy Christmas'', a cowboy gift show, is held concurrent with the rodeo at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Since the rodeo uses 'special dirt', the dirt is stored on the UNLV campus for use in the next NFR. Events The NFR is the final rodeo event of the PRCA season. World championship titles are awarded to the individuals who earn the most money in his or her event throughout the year. 7 events and 9 championships are sanctioned by the PRCA: * Bareback Riding - a rider has to stay on a bucking horse and is only allowed to hang on with a "rig ...

Intrusion Detection System
An intrusion detection system (IDS; also intrusion prevention system or IPS) is a device or software application that monitors a network or systems for malicious activity or policy violations. Any intrusion activity or violation is typically reported either to an administrator or collected centrally using a security information and event management (SIEM) system. A SIEM system combines outputs from multiple sources and uses alarm filtering techniques to distinguish malicious activity from false alarms. IDS types range in scope from single computers to large networks. The most common classifications are network intrusion detection systems (NIDS) and host-based intrusion detection systems (HIDS). A system that monitors important operating system files is an example of an HIDS, while a system that analyzes incoming network traffic is an example of an NIDS. It is also possible to classify IDS by detection approach. The most well-known variants are signature-based detection (recogni ...

New Republican Force
The New Republican Force (Spanish: ''Nueva Fuerza Republicana'', NFR) is a center-right political party in Bolivia. It is mainly based in the department of Cochabamba. History The NFR was founded in 1995. After the Assembly for the Sovereignty of the Peoples' (ASP) success in the 1999 municipal elections in Cochabamba, the NFR offered ASP leader Alejo Véliz and other peasant activists top candidate positions and won them over. At the legislative elections in 2002, the party won 26.5% of the popular vote and 27 out of 130 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and two out of 27 seats in the Senate. Its candidate at the presidential elections, Manfred Reyes Villa, won 20.9% of the popular vote. After the election, the party joined the multiparty coalition of president Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada of the Revolutionary Nationalist Movement (MNR). In October 2003, the NFR decided to leave the coalition and Reyes Villa and the other three NFR ministers resigned. This deprived the president of ...

Do Not Resuscitate
A do-not-resuscitate order (DNR), also known as Do Not Attempt Resuscitation (DNAR), Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (DNACPR), no code or allow natural death, is a medical order, written or oral depending on country, indicating that a person should not receive cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if that person's heart stops beating. Sometimes these decisions and the relevant documents also encompass decisions around other critical or life-prolonging medical interventions. The legal status and processes surrounding DNR orders vary from country to country. Most commonly, the order is placed by a physician based on a combination of medical judgement and patient involvement. Basis for choice Interviews with 26 DNR patients and 16 full code patients in Toronto in 2006-9 suggest that the decision to choose do-not-resuscitate status was based on personal factors including health and lifestyle; relational factors (to family or to society as a whole); and philosophical f ...

Non-filterable Residue
Total suspended solids (TSS) is the dry-weight of suspended particles, that are not dissolved, in a sample of water that can be trapped by a filter that is analyzed using a filtration apparatus known as sintered glass crucible. TSS is a water quality parameter used to assess the quality of a specimen of any type of water or water body, ocean water for example, or wastewater after treatment in a wastewater treatment plant. It is listed as a conventional pollutant in the U.S. Clean Water Act. Total dissolved solids is another parameter acquired through a separate analysis which is also used to determine water quality based on the total substances that are fully dissolved within the water, rather than undissolved suspended particles. TSS is also referred to using the terms total suspended matter (TSM) and suspended particulate matter (SPM). All three terms describe the same essential measurement. TSS was previously called non-filterable residue (NFR), but was changed to TSS beca ...

Nefer
The Egyptian hieroglyph for "perfect, complete" (with the extended meanings of "good, pleasant, well, beautiful") in Gardiner's sign list is numbered F35; its phonetic value is ', with a reconstructed pronunciation of and a conventional Egyptological vocalization of '. Hieroglyphs and symbolism The triliteral Egyptian hieroglyph F35 ('nfr') has sometimes been explained as a representation of a lute; however, Egyptologists today no longer consider this hypothesis likely. Rather than a lute, the hieroglyph is actually a representation of the heart and trachea. It originally may have been the esophagus and heart. The striations of the windpipe only appear in the hieroglyph following the Old Kingdom of Egypt. The lower part of the sign has always clearly been the heart, for the markings clearly follow the form of a sheep's heart. Use The term ' has been incorporated into many names in Ancient Egypt. Examples include Nefertiti, Nefertari, and Neferhotep. Some scholars suggest t ...

Nociceptive Flexion Reflex
The withdrawal reflex (nociceptive flexion reflex or flexor withdrawal reflex) is a spinal reflex intended to protect the body from damaging stimuli. The reflex rapidly coordinates the contractions of all the flexor muscles and the relaxations of the extensors in that limb causing sudden withdrawal from the potentially damaging stimulus. Spinal reflexes are often monosynaptic and are mediated by a simple reflex arc. A withdrawal reflex is mediated by a polysynaptic reflex resulting in the stimulation of many motor neurons in order to give a quick response. Example When a person touches a hot object and withdraws their hand from it without actively thinking about it, the heat stimulates temperature and pain receptors in the skin, triggering a sensory impulse that travels to the central nervous system. The sensory neuron then synapses with interneurons that connect to motor neurons. Some of these send motor impulses to the flexors that lead to the muscles in the arm to contract ...

Non-functional Requirement
In systems engineering and requirements engineering, a non-functional requirement (NFR) is a requirement that specifies criteria that can be used to judge the operation of a system, rather than specific behaviours. They are contrasted with functional requirements that define specific behavior or functions. The plan for implementing ''functional'' requirements is detailed in the system ''design''. The plan for implementing ''non-functional'' requirements is detailed in the system ''architecture'', because they are usually architecturally significant requirements. Definition Broadly, functional requirements define what a system is supposed to ''do'' and non-functional requirements define how a system is supposed to ''be''. Functional requirements are usually in the form of "system shall do ", an individual action or part of the system, perhaps explicitly in the sense of a mathematical function, a black box description input, output, process and control functional model or IP ...

Non-financial Risk
Non-financial risks (NFR) are all of the risks which are not covered by traditional financial risk management. This negative definition resembles the initial definition of operational risk, and it depends on the bank or cooperation whether or not they use the term operational risk synchronously with NFR. Since 2019, the new term NFR became popular in the risk management sector Examples Non-financial risks include: * Operational risk (Op risk). In case that Op risk is considered a part of NFR (and not as equivalent), Op risk summarizes e.g. those risks which can be quantified by the use of scenario models. Examples are pandemics, floods and other weather events. * Conduct risk means that the behavior of the cooperation's employees leads to losses * Cyber risk and IT risk are possible losses due to security breaches. * Compliance risks are risks related to Governance, risk management, and compliance. Managing the compliance risk means putting a price tag on potential failure ...
