NEODyS
NEODyS (Near Earth Objects Dynamic Site) is an Italian service that provides information on near-Earth objects with a Web-based interface. It is based on a continually and (almost) automatically maintained database of near earth asteroid orbits. This site provides a number of services to the NEO community. The main service is an impact monitoring system (CLOMON2) of all near-Earth asteroids covering a period until the year 2100. Services * Risk Page: One of the most important services is the production of a Risk Page where 1128 NEOs with probabilities of hitting the Earth greater of 10−11 from now until 2100 are shown in a Risk list. 101955 Bennu
101955 Bennu (provisional designation ) is a carbonaceous asteroid in the Apollo group discovered by the LINEAR Project on 11 September 1999. It is a potentially hazardous object that is listed on the Sentry Risk Table and has the highest cumulative rating on the Palermo Technical Impact Hazard Scale. It has a cumulative 1-in-1,800 chance of impacting Earth between 2178 and 2290 with the greatest risk being on 24 September 2182. It is named after the Bennu, the ancient Egyptian mythological bird associated with the Sun, creation, and rebirth. has a mean diameter of and has been observed extensively by the Arecibo Observatory planetary radar and the Goldstone Deep Space Network. Bennu was the target of the OSIRIS-REx mission which is intended to return its samples to Earth in 2023 for further study. A near-Earth object (NEO) is any small Solar System body whose orbit brings it into proximity with Earth. By convention, a Solar System body is a NEO if its closest approach to the Sun (perihelion) is less than 1.3 astronomical units (AU). If a NEO's orbit crosses the Earth's orbit, and the object is larger than across, it is considered a potentially hazardous object (PHO). Most known PHOs and NEOs are asteroids, but a small fraction are comets. There are over 30,503 known near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) and over a hundred known short-period near-Earth comets (NECs). A number of solar-orbiting meteoroids were large enough to be tracked in space before striking the Earth. It is now widely accepted that collisions in the past have had a significant role in shaping the geological and biological history of the Earth. Andrea Milani (mathematician)
Andrea Milani Comparetti (Florence, 19 June 1948 – Pisa, 28 November 2018) was an Italian mathematician and astronomer, based at the University of Pisa. Biography Andrea Milani Comparetti was born in Florence, in 1948. His father, Adriano Milani Comparetti, was a pioneer in child neuro-psychiatric rehabilitation and his uncle was Don Lorenzo Milani. In 1970 he graduated in Mathematics at the University of Milan and later he studied at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa. He then became a Full Professor of Mathematical Physics at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Pisa. He died on November 28, 2018, for a sudden illness, causing a deep loss in the scientific community. Career His areas of research included the N-body problem, the stability of the Solar System, asteroid dynamics, asteroid families, satellite geodesy, planetary exploration, orbit determination and asteroid impact risk assessment. Minimum Orbital Intersection Distance
Minimum orbit intersection distance (MOID) is a measure used in astronomy to assess potential close approaches and collision risks between astronomical objects. It is defined as the distance between the closest points of the osculating orbits of two bodies. Of greatest interest is the risk of a collision with Earth. Earth MOID is often listed on comet and asteroid databases such as the JPL Small-Body Database. MOID values are also defined with respect to other bodies as well: Jupiter MOID, Venus MOID and so on. An object is classified as a potentially hazardous object (PHO) – that is, posing a possible risk to Earth – if, among other conditions, its Earth MOID is less than 0.05 AU.
