NEAB (Northern Examinations and Assessment Board) was an examination board serving England, Wales and Northern Ireland from 1992 until 2000 when it merged with AEB/SEG to form AQA. Joint Matriculation Board
The Joint Matriculation Board of the Universities of Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield and Birmingham (JMB), sometimes referred to as the Northern Universities Joint Matriculation Board, was an examination board, operating in England, Wales and Northern Ireland between 1903 and 1992. It became part of NEAB, which itself is now part of AQA. Beginnings The Joint Matriculation Board was founded by the Victoria University of Manchester, the University of Liverpool and the University of Leeds. The universities had been part of the same institution (the Victoria University), but were in the process of de-merging. The universities set up the board to maintain a common entrance exam. The board allowed its exams to be taken by local schools, which was to become its main business. The University of Sheffield joined the board in 1905. Kathleen Tattersall
Kathleen Tattersall (11 April 1942 – 23 January 2013) was a British educationalist, specialising in examination administration. She was the leader of five examination boards in the United Kingdom before becoming the first head of exams regulator Ofqual. Early life Kathleen Tattersall was born in Burnley on 11 April 1942, the only child of Ellen Tattersall (''née'' Mason) and Tom Tattersall. Tattersall was educated at Paddock House Convent Grammar School in Oswaldtwistle. She then went on to study at the University of Manchester, gaining a bachelor's degree in 1963, Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in 1964 and, later, a Master of Education degree in 1975. The Associated Examining Board (AEB) was an examination board serving England, Wales and Northern Ireland from 1953 until 2000 when it merged with NEAB to form AQA. History Formation The Associated Examining Board was formed in response to the United Kingdom Ministry of Education's decision to introduce the General Certificate of Education (GCE) qualification, available at Ordinary Level and Advanced Level, in England, Wales and Northern Ireland from 1951. The new exams would attract a broader range of candidates than the School Certificate and Higher School Certificate that they replaced. While there were already eleven examination boards offering school qualifications across the UK, all eight of those based in England were affiliated with universities and focused very much on traditional academic subjects. The General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level, or A Level, is a main school leaving qualification in England, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. It is available as an alternative qualification in other countries. Students generally study for A levels over a two-year period. For much of their history, A levels have been examined by "terminal" examinations taken at the end of these two years.
