NBC Denis Compton Award
The NBC Denis Compton Award was an annual award given to 'The Most Promising Young Player' at each of the 18 first-class counties in England and Wales. The award was made between 1996 and 2011. A player may receive the award more than once. History The award was born in 1996 when Neil Burns, the former Somerset wicket-keeper-batsman, and now a director of NBC Sports Management Ltd, met Denis Compton while playing for Sir Paul Getty's XI. Burns put forward his ideas for a structured programme that would see promising young English players sent for coaching in South Africa during the English winter. First-class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but it was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. At a meeting of the Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) in 1947, it was formally defined on a global basis. Robert Cunliffe (cricketer)
Robert Cunliffe (born 8 November 1973) is an English cricketer. He is a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-pace bowler. During his nine years in first-class cricket he played for Gloucestershire and Leicestershire. Cunliffe played in six Youth Test matches for England in the calendar year of 1993. Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club
Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Nottinghamshire. The club's limited overs team is called the Notts Outlaws. The county club was founded in 1841, although teams had played first-class cricket under the Nottinghamshire name since 1835. Northamptonshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Northamptonshire. Its limited overs team is called the Northants Steelbacks – a reference to the Northamptonshire Regiment which was formed in 1881. The name was supposedly a tribute to the soldiers' apparent indifference to the harsh discipline imposed by their officers. Richard Johnson (cricketer, Born 1974)
Richard Leonard Johnson (born 29 December 1974) is a former international English cricketer and the current coach of Middlesex County Cricket Club. Domestic career A right-handed batsman and right-arm fast-medium pace swing bowler, Johnson made his first-class debut as a teenager in the 1992 County Championship as an opening bowler for Middlesex. Johnson made headlines in 1994 when he took all ten Derbyshire wickets in their second-innings, returning figures of 10/45. These remain the best innings figures taken in the English County Championship since 1945. He joined Somerset in 2001, helping the county to win the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy in that season. Iain Sutcliffe
Iain John Sutcliffe (born 20 December 1974) is a former English cricketer who played for the cricket teams of Oxford University, British Universities cricket team, Combined Universities, Leicestershire, British Universities cricket team, British Universities and Lancashire. He played as a left-handed batsman, primarily as an opener in four-day cricket, and as a very occasional spin bowler. He also represented Oxford University as a middleweight Boxing, boxer. Leicestershire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Leicestershire. It has also been representative of the county of Rutland. The club's limited overs team is called the Leicestershire Foxes. Ben James Phillips (born 30 September 1974) is an English cricketer who played for Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club until his release in 2013. He is a right-handed batsman and right-arm fast-medium pace bowler. Career Phillips began his career at Kent, appearing for their Second XI regularly throughout the late 1990s. His made his first-class cricket debut for the club against Sussex early in the 1996 season, taking four wickets in the match. He failed to impress during the following match against Leicestershire, taking no wickets, and only made one more first-class appearance in the season. Despite scoring his maiden first-class century in 1997 against Lancashire and twice taking 5 wickets in an innings, he dropped out of the first-class game at the end of the 1998 season after 27 appearances for Kent.
