This article lists the winners and nominees for the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Gospel Artist. The award was first given during the 1980 ceremony and was later retired in 2009. During the years 2000 to 2002, the category was adjusted to award contemporary and traditional gospel artists separately. It was reverted in 2003. Since its conception, Kirk Franklin holds the record for most wins in this category with five. Yolanda Adams holds the record for the most wins in this category for female artists. NAACP Image Award
The NAACP Image Awards is an annual awards ceremony presented by the U.S.-based National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to honor outstanding performances in film, television, theatre, music, and literature. Similar to other awards, like the Oscars and the Grammys, the over 40 categories of the Image Awards are voted on by the award organization's members (in this case, NAACP members). Honorary awards (similar to the Academy Honorary Award) have also been included, such as the President's Award, the Chairman's Award, the Entertainer of the Year, and the Hall of Fame Award. Donnie McClurkin
Donald Andrew "Donnie" McClurkin, Jr. (born November 9, 1959) is an American gospel singer and minister. He has won three Grammy Awards, ten Stellar Awards, two BET Awards, two Soul Train Awards, one Dove Award and one NAACP Image Awards. He is one of the top selling gospel artists, selling over 10 million albums worldwide. ''Variety'' dubbed McClurkin as a "Reigning King of Urban Gospel". Mary Mary is a female American urban contemporary gospel duo composed of sisters Erica Atkins-Campbell (born April 29, 1972) and Trecina Atkins-Campbell (born May 1, 1974). Formed in 1998, Mary Mary was launched into mainstream recognition following the release of their best-selling debut album, '' Thankful'' (2000), which contained the hit single "Shackles (Praise You)". Aaron Neville
Aaron Joseph Neville (born January 24, 1941) is a retired American R&B and soul singer. He has had four platinum albums and four Top 10 hits in the United States, including three that reached number one on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart. "Tell It Like It Is", from 1966, also reached the top position on the Soul chart for five weeks. He has also recorded with his brothers Art, Charles and Cyril as the Neville Brothers and is the father of singer/keyboards player Ivan Neville. Vickie Winans (born Viviane Bowman; October 18, 1953) is an American gospel singer. Early life The seventh of twelve children, Winans was born in Michigan to Mattie A. Bowman, a housewife, and Aaron Bowman, who worked at various times as a laborer, contractor, carpenter and mason. She began singing in church – the International Gospel Center – at the age of eight, and as a teenager she sang with a group known as the International Sounds of Deliverance. Frederick William Hammond (born December 27, 1960) is an American gospel singer, bass guitar player, and record producer. He is regarded as one of the most popular figures in contemporary gospel music. He is known for using a variety of different styles in his music such as R&B, hip-hop, and disco. God's Property
God's Property was a gospel choir known for its collaborations with Kirk Franklin, and other recording artists. Music career In 1992, God's Property Choir was organized and founded by Linda Ray Hall-Searight (a public school music teacher) in Dallas, Texas. She and her son, Grammy Awards winner Robert Sput Searight, and daughters Robin and Rachella Searight, were responsible for recruiting all of the original singers and musicians of this choir. Linda Searight groomed the choir into an exceptional performing organization, that was often featured on national television shows in the mid and late 1990s. The choir began to collaborate with Kirk Franklin in 1994, and sang backup on his 1995 album, ''Whatcha Looking' 4''.
